16 Photos of the March 18 Protest

by Peter Maiden (petermaiden [at] streetdemos.com)
Here are 16 pictures from the March 18 protest in San Francisco, organized by ANSWER. The march started at the Embarcadero and wound up at Civic Center. There were over 40,000 people there in my estimate.

ANSWER-LA says 50,000 marched in Los Angeles; 40,000 in San Francisco. There are 750,000 people in San Francisco, 7 million people in the 9 counties of the Bay Area including San Francisco, and 11 million people, including the 7 million in the Bay Area, in Northern California. There are 25 million people living in Southern California, from Monterey to the Mexican border. This 25 million includes 3.6 million people in Los Angeles and 12 million in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana metropolitan area. Unlike DC, we had good weather in both places. With the many economic crises in this society, I cannot imagine what it takes to move people in this society. Is it 50% of the US being homeless? What are most people waiting for? At SFGate (the online presence for the Hearst-owned San Francisco Chronicle), staff writers Glen Martin and Meredith May report:

"...about 3,000 boisterous protesters marched from the Embarcadero through downtown San Francisco to Civic Center on Sunday afternoon."

They further slant the story by quoting a CNN poll showing that 35 percent of Americans "are confident about the war in Iraq." (A poll of 1, 027 adults.)

Their story, which will likely take precedence on Google News-story "wires" also dutifully reported that "Sunday's San Francisco march was in keeping with the city's reputation. The air reeked of burning white sage and patchouli and, occasionally, marijuana."

At this moment FOX News on KTVU is telling a story about Bay Area conservatives who think the U.S. should stay in Iraq! One woman being interviewed is criticizing the Chronicle "for its liberal bias[!]"

yeah in Fresno, the local Fox channel just reported SF being only about 3,000 people. they didn't say who was the source of the info, but they showed some really strategic shots from a helicopter.

i was there today in sf and know better than to believe this 3000 bs...how stupid do they think we are...i am going to figure out how to call fox and figure out who there source was for that #...i also have a friend of a friend that reports for them, so if nothing else i'll just get the info from her
