Chico Grandmother to Report to Prison for Trespassing at the School of the Americas
Join Us to Show Your Support!!
Cathy Webster, founder of 1,000 Grandmothers (http://www.1000grandmothers.net), will report to prison on Wednesday, March 21st in Elk Grove, CA. We invite and encourage people throughout northern California to join us either in Chico and/or at the gates of Rio Cosumnes Correctional Facility in Elk Grove.
In the same spirit as the civil rights movement, Cathy Webster used non-violent civil disobedience to shine a spotlight on the teachings at the School of the Americas/ Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. Cathy trespassed on the U.S. Army base to protest the teaching of counter-insurgency techniques and torture to Latin American soldiers that return to their home countries and commit atrocities.
In Chico
Chico interfaith religious leaders will gather at the new Martin Luther King, Jr. statue in Community Park on 20th Street at 9am on Wednesday, March 21st to send this local grandmother on her journey to prison. The gathering will last an hour.
Caravan to Elk Grove
At 10am, a caravan will leave Chico for Elk Grove, located just south of Sacramento. Cathy will enjoy lunch with supporters at a local restaurant before turning herself in to begin serving her sentence of 60 days. We hope that the caravan will be met at the correctional facility by supporters from around northern California.
