Francisco Rodriguez, Candidate for President, Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers, and Jennifer Laskin, Candidate for Executive Vice President of Alternative Ed, rally for support at the Watsonville Downtown Plaza on Tuesday.

Friends and supporters of Francisco Rodriguez gathered at the Watsonville City Plaza on Tuesday, March 13 to rally support and inform teachers of the campaign to Elect Francisco Rodriguez for PVFT President in the first contested election in the union since 1993.

With hand made signs and chants eliciting honks from passers by, the group called attention to this year's Teachers Union Election. "I believe it is time to have real communication, accountability and collaboration, not only within our Local, but with the other CFT Locals in the Monterey Bay" said Rodriguez.

Laskin, a Humanities teacher at Renaissance High School believes it is time for a change in the way schools are being treated under the, “No Child Left Behind” act. The union has been explicit in the sanctions being waged against teachers in so-called, “low-performing” schools. “It is time to raise our voice and speak the truth about what these mandated programs are doing to students and our morale. They prevent qualified teachers from doing we do quite well, serving students and teaching based on what we know is best using our experience, collaboration and training. We have a chance to change PVFT leadership this year in a big way that can give us some of our power back.”

Ballots went to teachers home addresses on March 9. They MUST be returned to the union PO Box by March 28. Any ballots not in the box on that day will not be counted.

Guest Workers Fired After Protesting Slave-Like Conditions
Photojournalist and trade unionist David Bacon is author of Communities Without Borders: Images and Voices from the World of Migration.

Hundreds of guest workers from India are protesting conditions in a Pascagoula shipyard that immigrant rights activists compare to slavery. Many gathered in a church on March 11 in this Gulf Coast port, after their employer, Signal International, threatened to send some of the workers home. Signal is a large corporation that repairs and services oil drilling platforms in the Gulf.

Afternoon Forum Highlights Candidates’ Stands on Iraq War
by Mike Hall, Mar 14, 2007

The Fire Fighters union is hosting the nation’s first bipartisan presidential debate of the 2008 election season, and Mike Hall is live-blogging today from the meeting in Washington, D.C. Each candidate will speak for 15 minutes.

Sen. John McCain kicked off the afternoon session with a few jokes—mostly self-deprecating—and those were met with laughs. But his nearly 10-minute, somber but heartfelt, defense of the war in Iraq was met at best with polite applause

Welcome to the brand new edition of the Houston Independent Media Center Radio Show! First up, the headlines include coverage of the Watsonville rally in response to the restrictions of the No Child Left Behind Act, a report on the nationwide effects of skyrocketing gas prices, and information about the Rice University Environmental Club’s upcoming panel discussion "Whose Earth is it?: People. Petrochemicals, and Environmental Justice".

Our first feature this week is a report on the Indian Guest workers in Mississippi and their strike against the slave-like conditions of the H2B Visa program, produced by local Indymedia reporter Rachel Clarke in collaboration with Nola Indymedia reporter Christian Roseland. Next, reporter Nick interviewed a member of SDS, a new group with an old name. Listen to Nick and Pat talk about the group’s connection to the original radical student organization, their attempt to shut down a recruiting center, and the eye-opening experience of their subsequent arrest.

Check out the announcements at the end of the show for information on some of the events going on in the Houston Area. For more details, or other events coming up this month, visit the HIMC calendar.
