Raging Grannies at Monster Cable Workers' Demo
March 3, 2007: Grannies Went Undercover to Help Laid-Off Monster Cable Workers. With sunglasses on, we were sure to be unrecognizable.
When the call came from the Chinese Progressive Association, the Grannies sprang into action. As former students of Q'ing Dynasty porcelain, Early Asian Bronze Wear, and advanced fabric painting, we could not stand by idly and let Cable Monster CEO Noel Lee lay off (mostly Cantonese monolingual) immigrant workers without putting our masters degrees to good use.
Last fall *120* workers were callously laid off with only a fraction of the severance pay that Monster Cable had paid in previous years and replaced, ironically, by OFF SHORE cheaper labor. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors and US congressman Tom Lantos, as well as dozens of labor groups, have called upon Monster Cable to pay workers a fair severance. The Raging Grannies of San Jose and the Raging Grannies Action League proudly join this list and demand a FAIR DEAL for these mostly middle-aged and older former employees.
Hence...we joined in the rally IN FRONT OF THE HILLSBOROUGH HOME OF CEO NOEL LEE, who has been completely unresponsive to requests for meetings with the workers and/or their representatives.
