What is this project? The Nigerian Micro-credit Loan and Reproductive Healthcare Education project has two pillars geared to enhance the socio-economic stature of Nigeria. One half provides small revolving loans to groups of three women in order for them to start their own businesses. The other portion of this project aims to raise the awareness of reproductive healthcare among teenagers and women in Ibadan, Nigeria. . Why should you support it? Revolving Micro-credit Loans: Women in the poorest families in Ibadan receive loans of about $100 to set up their own small businesses, including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable stands, even sewing and carpentry services, to generate income and improve the economic status of their families. In the previous phase of this project (2006), 100% of the micro-credit loans were repaid. Reproductive Healthcare Education: One dozen children in a family are common, and go hand in hand with a high maternal and infant mortality rate. Providing reproductive healthcare awareness classes to teenage high school students and adult women in the city of Ibadan will educate them about the importance and benefits of proper reproductive healthcare, including the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
