Asian Week Not Off the Hook for Firing Kenneth Eng
On February 28th, Asian Week apologized for publishing Kenneth Eng’s column “Why I Hate Blacks,” and announced that Eng would no longer write for them. Editor Ted Fang apologized in a March 1st press conference, and on March 2nd held a community forum about race relations. But Fang has yet to explain how the column was ever published, or why they did not take action earlier when Eng wrote similar columns for the newspaper. When first confronted about the column, Editor-in-Chief Samson Wong replied that they publish diverse opinions in the Asian-American community – even its “disturbing warts.”
While Asian Week now says that its editorial process is “under review,” how did they even hire someone like Eng in the first place? As the editors of SFist have proven, an online search of Kenneth Eng provides plenty of evidence that he is at worst a racist – or at best extremely angry and unstable. In an age of Google searches, the editors of Asian Week had simply no excuse to not know whom they were dealing with. Eng was a symptom of a larger problem, and more questions need to be answered before the paper regains its reputation in the community.
I have read in the past few days more of Eng’s writings than anyone should, and the only conclusion I can come up with is that he is a vicious racist. On his personal blog, Eng wrote in January 2007 that religious people “tend to be incredibly stupid or poor,” and are “usually black/hispanic immigrants who do not have the brains or the balls to understand science and thus resort to reading retarded stories about saviors and saints.”
In August 2004, Eng recounted in an online webzine his experiences at NYU where he encountered “anti-Asian discrimination,” and was ostracized for his provocative views. But he never elaborates in the piece what his actual opinions were, besides “Hitler was not a coward” and that African-Americans receive “unfair assistance.” While opposing affirmative action is not necessarily racist, anyone who reads the article can tell that Eng has a serious chip on his shoulder, and that his rhetoric could easily descend into hate speech.
But the most disturbing part of Eng’s writings is a website that he created called “Yellow Skull” – where he urges Asian-Americans to unite against blacks and whites, and to “finally make those big-eyed fuckers suffer.” He calls both white and black people “the enemy,” glorifies Asians who have killed whites in self-defense, and says that white people “deserve” to be decapitated. I don’t recommend viewing the site.

This continued harping on a trashy weekly paper of some 45,000 circulation in the free newsracks of San Francisco makes one wonder what is really going on. Of course, both the idiot who wrote the racist garbage and the idiot editor who agreed to print the racist garbage should be fired. However, the entire Asian Week paper is bourgeois Babbitt business promoting nationalistic drivel. The only reason any fuss was made is because this paper is a mouthpiece of the Democratic Party which pretends to be concerned about racism. Of course, a party which promotes prisons, the death penalty and war promotes racism by definition. It is the Democratic California Superintendent of Schools O'Connell who promotes the high school exit exam as a mandatory requirement to get a high school diploma, which students fail even when they pass all the required courses. This is the latest attempt to push the workingclass, primarly black and Latino, students out of school and into prison to further perpetuate the taxpayer funded construction project and campaign payoff racket known as the prison system. The promotion of the admittedly racist state of Israel by both the Democrats and Republicans is further proof that the Democratic Party's concern about racism is a vicious lie. It is an old adage that all nationalism is reactionary. What we need is unity of the workingclass of all colors to put an end to the profit motive, and the sooner the better.
