We are in very dark times but our struggles can be won

by Robert B. Livingston (gruaudemais [at] yahoo.com)
Lynne Stewart, Carlos Villareal, Pam Africa, Jeff Mackler, Diana Block and Michael Ratner appeared together in the San Francisco Mission district this evening to denounce America's use of torture at home and abroad and to spur activists to resist those who sanction or abet it.

The theme shared by a number of noteworthy speakers who appeared before a crowded hall of political activists this evening at the Women's Building was possibly best summed up by one, Michael Ratner the president of the Center for Constitutional Rights. "America is on the road to tyranny," he warned.

Criminals in the White House and Pentagon have been seeking to legitimize a police state. They do it by instituting policies that allow indefinite detention, the use of torture and extraordinary rendition, and by creating kangaroo courts that make a mockery of justice. Their aim: to instill fear and rule unchallenged.

How long will they succeed?

Whatever the personal costs, none of the speakers tonight appeared willing to ever give up their struggles for justice.

Michael Ratner made it clear that Dick Cheney and Berkeley professor John Yoo are unlikely to travel to Germany anytime soon.

Nancy Pelosi can cut off funding to the gulag at Guantanamo tomorrow.

Why doesn't she? How can we make her?

Here are a few photos from the evening's event. It is to be hoped that recordings may become available to the public soon.

"dj Questionmark" has thoughtfully provided a recording of the first part of last night's event on Indybay.

According to dj-- his tape ran out before Pam Africa and Diana Block spoke!

Is it Mercury Retrograde yet? My pen ran out of ink at the same time while I was taking notes!
