TELL PRESIDENT SCHMOTTER NOT TO CENSOR FORUM ON IMMIGRANT RAIDS!!
The administration of Western Connecticut State University is
attempting to censor the upcoming forum on the immigration raids set
for Sunday at 4 p.m. on the WCSU campus in Danbury. The assistant dean
of student affairs is claiming the right to insert himself as forum
moderator and invite an anti-immigrant speaker onto the panel for
"balance." He has threatened to cancel the forum otherwise.
This would totally alter the character of the forum, turning it from a
meeting to oppose the raids to a debate between hostile adversaries.
Organizers have been advised that their right to free speech is being
violated. No university has the right to decide which ideas are
acceptable or to alter the makeup of the speakers on a panel.
35 immigrant workers have been arrested by federal agents in Danbury in
4 months, including at least 12 in the past week. A regional forum on
the raids is going to be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Ives Concert Hall,
181 White St., on the WCSU campus.
Please ask President Schmotter to defend free speech and allow the
voices of the immigrant victims and advocates to be clearly heard!!
