Universes is an ensemble of multi-cultural, multi-disciplined, NY writers and performers who fuse poetry, theater, jazz, hip-hop, Politics, down home blues and Spanish boleros to create moving, challenging and entertaining theatrical works. The group breaks the bounds of traditional theater to create their own brand of performance.
UNIVERSES: Live From the Edge
Showcasing the ensemble’s special brand of fusion theater in a "best of" evening that tracks the evolution of their poetic language from childhood rhymes and community rituals, to poetry and theater, hip-hop and gospel. Redefining what theater is and who it speaks to, Live From the Edge is a unique performance event that turns the poem into a communal act.
I wish they were performing their latest piece...
which reflects more where they're coming from, Politically....
AMERIVILLE Spring 2007
In the wake of 9/11, terror level color codes, and the misinformation super highway, Ameriville reminds us of our vulnerability to believe or dismiss everything we hear as we are led by fear into the internal wars of today and those to come. Inspired by Welles’ “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast, and maneuvering past today’s air of censorship, patriotism and the marriage of church and state, Universes exposes a disrobed Lady Liberty as she lays at the arms of mass media and technology, no longer sure of her own beliefs. In a multi-media frenzy of images and soundscapes fused with live poetry pulled from life stories, music and theater, Universes utilizes its trademark performance style, journeying back and forth through our nation’s memory, unearthing the roots of our fears while attempting to clip the branches of our current state.
