Friday: Support Medical Cannabis Inmates

by Americans for Safe Access
Welcome to Medical Marijuana Week!
*Friday: Support Medical Cannabis Inmates*
*Write Letters, Buy Reading Materials & Donate Money*

Several patients and providers are in jail awaiting trial or in prison serving
out their sentences. Although the actions of many of these prisoners were legal
under state law, defendants cannot bring up a medical defense in federal court.
These medical cannabis inmates depend on support from people like you to stay
connected to the outside world.

Please read their stories and
<http://www.americansforsafeaccess.org/writetoprisoners>find their contact
information <http://www.americansforsafeaccess.org/writetoprisoners> on the ASA
website. Then, show your support to these inmates by writing them letters or
supporting them in one of the following ways:

* 1. Write letters.*
Your letter doesn't have to be a Pulitzer prize winning effort - even a
postcard would do. You might also want to send drawings or photographs. Never
written to a prisoner before? Check out tips on how to write to prisoners
<http://www.americansforsafeaccess.org/writetoprisoners> on ASA's website.

*2. Buy them newspaper or magazine subscriptions or order them books.
Help these inmates stay connected to the outside world. As long as the magazine
or newspaper comes straight from the publisher it's usually not a problem.
Books can be sent directly from an online store or directly from the publisher.
You cannot send magazines or books you purchase yourself; they must come
directly from the publisher or store. Also, they must be sent via the US postal
service and cannot be sent in such a way that they must be signed for.

* 3. Put money in their commissary.*
If you're interested in doing this, contact Western Union, preferably by phone.
The operator knows exactly how to send it. You'll need an address and prisoner
number, which you can find on the ASA website.

4. *Gather Signatures for the Petition Calling for Congressional Hearings:*
<http://www.safeaccessnow.org/downloads/congressional%20petition.pdf> One of
the best ways we can help medical cannabis inmates is by changing federal law,
and congressional hearings are a step in that direction. Print out the PDF of
the petition from ASA's website and start gathering signatures. Please send
completed petitions to ASA Headquarters:

*5. Spread the Word: *
Forward this message widely to friends, co-workers, and family to encourage
them to join you in the national movement to protect safe access!

Sincerely,

Kris Hermes
