OAKLAND -- Six people have been arrested in Oakland and San Francisco as part of a crackdown on a Northern California marijuana-growing ring that produced 1,500 plants with a street value of $6 million, according to state authorities.
Roy Giorgi, commander of the Yolo County Narcotic Enforcement Team, a branch of the state Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, said five houses in Oakland and West Sacramento were raided in simultaneous actions at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
The raids and arrests were the culmination of a three-month investigation, he said.
The suspects are being held in the Yolo County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail each and could be indicted by a federal grand jury in Sacramento in the next few weeks, Giorgi said.
Giorgi said the biggest seizure - more than 700 marijuana plants in multiple stages of growth - was at a three-story house at 701 MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland, less than a mile from Oakland High School.
He said another house in Oakland, at 3735 Lincoln Ave., across the street from Sequoia Elementary School, yielded three of the suspects, more than 500 plans and 4 pounds of packaged product.
A fourth suspect was arrested at a house in the 2500 block of Ninth Avenue in Oakland, but no marijuana was found there.
A house in the 1700 block of 11th Avenue in Oakland also was raided, but no plants were found, although there was a complete harvesting operation set up there, according to Giorgi.
About 300 plants were found at a house on Jefferson Boulevard in West Sacramento.
In total, the plants have a street value of about $6 million, Giorgi said.
Giorgi said the three men arrested at the Lincoln Avenue house were Van Hung Vi, 42, his brother, 56-year-old Van Dot Vi, and Tommy Su, 20, who is their nephew.
The Vis' brother, 55-year-old Van Hy Vi, was arrested at the Ninth Avenue house.
Also arrested was 27-year-old Ivy Tran, who was taken into custody at her consulting office on Ninth Street in Oakland's Chinatown.
In addition, 23-year-old Tommie Ly, another nephew of the Vis, was arrested at his apartment on Pacific Avenue in San Francisco.
Giorgi said the investigation is ongoing and there could be more raids and more arrests.
