“Interrogates assumptions about the tensions of everyday demands and the need for a sacred space, a place of contemplation and restoration.”

On Friday, February 16th, 2007, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi hosts the monthly Third Friday’s Art Reception in his City Hall office, Room 282. This month’s featured artist is Martin Grizzell.

Showcasing Martin Grizzell's ability to envision and establish cultural linkages between the Northern Califronia textile movement of the 1960's, the 1919-1940 Art Deco Movement, originating in Europe, and ancient West African textile design and decorative art traditions. Grizzell's design practice expands the definition of tapestry from a design in thread and needle to a design of thread, needle, and semi-precious jewels. His manipulation of fibers and placement of colors patterns and symbols result in a highly eclectic geometric language. Grizzell's artistry demonstrates broad knowledge of fabric, needlework and textile history, yet his creative door remains open to works of alchemy.

Martin Grizzell is a San Francisco native who has traveled Europe researching textile development in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. "When A Door is A Window" was originally exhibited at Sausalito's San Francisco Bay Model Gallery-US Army Corps of Engineers. Additionally, Grizzell's work has also been featured at the Crawlspace Gallery in Amsterdam, Holland, amongst other locations. Come experience the images painted with Martin Grizzell's needle.
