Stimson apologizes for threatening lawyers who dare to represent Guanbtanimo detainees
Almost immediatly after protestors demanded on Jan 11 that Guantanimo Bay be closed, assistant deputy Secretary of Defense for Detainee affairs Charles Stimson called for a boycott and for investigation of lawyers representing detainees. Now, thanks to YOUR PRESSURE, he has printed an apology in the Washington Post.
Listen now:
The pressure was so intense that Pentagon offiicals almost immediately disavowed the threats. Stimson's apology probably does NOT represent any shift in his own position, but rather a shift in US policy.
Legal groups pointed out that for the pentagon to call for investigation lawyers and ffor boycotts against law firms representing Guantanimo Bay detainees amounted to obstruction of justice.
Thanks to your pressure, the US government has been deterred from trying to stop law firms from representing Guantanimo Bay detainees. With ever-growing pressure to close this hellhole and try or release detainees, this reverse could have profound implications for the future of people who have been held without hope of release for half a decade!
