Activists to Converge at Congresswoman's Home

by Stephen Pearcy (stephen.pearcy [at] sbcglobal.net)
Activists will gather peacefully in front of Congresswoman Doris Matsui's Sacramento home Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to ask the Congresswoman to stop funding the "war" and to explain to her that by approving the funding of the war she puts the troops in harm's way.
Sacramento area activists have been trying for several days to get Congresswoman Doris Matsui to make a public commitment to stop funding and otherwise supporting the U.S. occupation of Iraq. To increase the pressure on her, many people have staged sit-ins in the lobby of Matsui's office this week. Thus far, the effort has been futile: Matsui still won't agree to stop the funding the war. Matsui says that she doesn't want to make that commitment because a withdrawal of funding could endanger the troops.

Peace activists are calling that nonsense. They have been trying to explain to Matsui that she's endangering the troops by funding their presence in Iraq. Stubbornly, however, Matsui refuses to acknowledge that.

Therefore, peace activists have decided to organize a direct action this Friday, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, in the form of a peaceful and lawful protest IN FRONT OF CONGRESSWOMAN MATSUI'S SACRAMENTO HOME.

Regardless of whether she only hears about the action from D.C., the organizers believe that Matsui will be more likely to pay attention if they visit her home. The important thing, according to the organizers, is that the symbolic effect of protesting in front of Congresswoman Matsui's home will generate public interest. It will create an opportunity for them to further publicize their expectation and insistence that she oppose any more funding or escalation of the Iraq occupation. Many peace supporters feel that Matsui's history of acquiescence is completely unacceptable.

Friday's event is IN ADDITION TO the large peace demonstration that will occur at 16th & Broadway, in Sacramento, this Saturday from 3:30 to 6pm.
