NATIONWIDE EVENTS COMMEMORATE 3,000 U.S.
MILITARY DEATHS IN IRAQ
Vigils Planned in More than 200 Communities Across the U.S.

Under the banner "Not One More Death, Not One More Dollar," more than 200
communities across the U.S. will hold war memorial events on the day following the
sad announcement that the 3,000th U.S. serviceperson has died. United for Peace and
Justice (UFPJ), the nation’s largest antiwar coalition, is coordinating the local
events in conjunction with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a UFPJ
affiliate.

The vigils will commemorate those lost in Iraq -- both military and civilian, both
American and Iraqi. The war memorial events will mourn the human cost of the Iraq
war, call for the troops to come home now, and support funding an Iraqi-led
reconstruction of the war-torn country.

Judith LeBlanc, Co-Chairperson of United for Peace and Justice, said “The loss of
U.S. and Iraqi lives in this immoral war and occupation is immeasurable. Not one
more Iraqi or U.S. soldier should be killed; not one more U.S. dollar should be
spent sustaining war and occupation. Instead of letting Bush increase troop levels
in Iraq, Congress should fund the speedy departure of all U.S. troops out of Iraq
and an Iraqi-led reconstruction of their country.”

LeBlanc added, “Every tragic moment demands that those who may not have acted before
do so now. Today we mourn. On January 27-29 people fed up with the war must seize
the opportunity to make their voices heard in the halls of Congress alongside United
for Peace and Justice.”

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker peace and social justice
organization and co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. United for Peace and Justice
(UFPJ) is the largest U.S. peace and justice coalition with more than 1,400 member
groups under its umbrella. Since its founding in October 2002, UFPJ has spurred
hundreds of protests and rallies around the country, including the largest marches
against the Iraq war. http://www.unitedforpeace.org

Given the handicaps under which they're operating, the fact that Team Iraq has scored their 3,000th goal against Team AmeriKKKa is impressive and something to celebrate!

"All are invited to participate in this event to honor our service men and women in Iraq."

What is honorable about killing in the service of the U.S. Empire?

The best that could be said about any of the U.S. troops is that they're totally brainwashed. There are other things one could say about many of them, like:

* They consider U.S. lives, and the U.S. middle-class lifestyle, worth infinitely more than the lives of Iraqis.

* They're willing to kill in exchange for a college education.

* They just plain like to be able to abuse and kill people without being treated as criminals.

It's unfortunate that the U.S. rulers are able to effectively cover up the extent and seriousness of non-lethal injuries to their troops in Iraq. If they weren't, it wouldn't be necessary to kill as many U.S. troops in order to totally undermine the ability of the Empire to recruit soldiers.

We should get copies of the video, "The Ground Truth", to everybody considering joining the U.S. military, as well as those already in it, and to the people who care about them. Only the clear awareness of the likely physical and mental harm that awaits them will stop most Americans from joining the military -- not the suffering of foreigners who don't look like them and don't speak English.

I appreciate any activity that may help to bring the invasion/occupation to an end. However, I don't think we should buy the "offical line" on the number of deaths.

Why should we believe that the government that lied about WMDs, and so many other things, to get support for an illegal, immoral invasion/occupation, will tell us the truth about how many of our poor young men and women have died to make the super rich richer? They don't allow photos of the coffins so no one can count. It appears that they are only counting those that die "in Iraq". Those that get air lifted to our military hospitals in Germany and die there or later are not counted. Those that committ suicide after coming back since they can't live with what they did, saw, or didn't stop others from doing or can't stand living with no legs etc. aren't counted. The invaders want to keep the numbers low to keep the heat down. I would think that if you counted all Iraq caused US deaths it would be around 10,000. This of course pales in comparison to the estimated 600,000+ victims of this invasion.

So keep up the protests of whatever kind and I will be there with you when I can. And please don't accept their lies about how many have died, on either side.
