Woodfin Picketing Saturday and Tuesday
Dear Friends,
This year, Woodfin Hotel workers got a great Christmas present - a temporary restraining order prohibiting the hotel from firing them over the holidays. However, the fight's not over yet. The workers' jobs are still in jeopardy in the long run, their work hours have been slashed to accomodate the replacement workers hired last week, the company owes them tens of thousands of dollars in back pay, and they still face heavy workloads and disrespectful treatment on the job. We will be continuing the boycott of the Woodfin Hotel until the company guarantees that workers will not be fired because of Social Security no-matches or support for Measure C. Please help us kick off a new year of worker justice at one or both of these pickets:
1. SATURDAY, DEC. 30, 7 AM to 11 AM: on workers' first day back on the job after their suspension, help us welcome them back to work and give the Woodfin a wake-up call!
2. TUESDAY, JAN. 2, 3 PM to 7 PM.
Also, last night the Emeryville City Council unanimously approved an emergency ordinance that would prohibit hotels from firing workers who have submitted complaints under Measure C until the city has finished investigating the complaints. Please contact the Council and thank them for their critical support of Woodfin workers! Call 510 596-4376 to reach the Council members' phone extensions, or email Dick Kassis (rkassis [at] ci.emeryville.ca.us), Ken Bukowski (kbukowski [at] ci.emeryville.ca.us), Ruth Atkin (ratkin [at] ci.emeryville.ca.us), Nora Davis (ndavis [at] ci.emeryville.ca.us), and John Fricke (jfricke [at] ci.emeryville.ca.us).
Thanks,
Sarah Norr
