Wish Lunardi's Supermarket a Happy New Year this Sunday in Walnut Creek

by East Bay Animal Advocates (info [at] eastbayanimaladvocates.org)
Walnut Creek, CA - On Sunday, December 31st, East Bay Animal Advocates (EBAA) will ask Lunardi's Supermarket to make a New Year’s Resolution to stop selling eggs from chickens raised in overcrowded, wire cages (known as battery cages). In order to advance the company's commitment to consumers and animals, concerned citizens are urging President Paul Lunardi to implement a cage-free egg policy at all his company's stores in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Date: Sunday, December 31st, 2006
Time: Noon - 1 p.m.
Place: Lunardi's Supermarket, 1600 Palos Verdes Mall (Geary & Pleasant Hill Road), Walnut Creek

As a high-end grocery chain, Lunardi's proclaims its purported commitment to excellence: "We can explain our prices, but we don't ever want to have to justify our quality."

Recently, EBAA documented conditions at one of Lunardi's egg suppliers. Shockingly, Lunardi's still sells eggs from chickens confined in overcrowded, wire cages. Citing concerns over animal care, EBAA has contacted Lunardi’s many times without a single response. Moreover, Lunardi's is the lead competitor of Andronico's Market, which stopped selling battery cage eggs in October 2006. Several other retailers, including Whole Foods Market and Wild Oats Natural Marketplace, have already adopted policies to carry only cage-free eggs.

East Bay Animal Advocates (EBAA) is a non-profit organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area. California is home to one of the most industrious and concentrated animal agriculture areas in the world. Exposing animal cruelty in modern agriculture is of utmost importance to EBAA. Through direct aid and consumer outreach, EBAA is dedicated to fighting and preventing animal abuse in California's agricultural industry.
