Woodfin to Workers: “Merry Christmas, You’re Fired”

by workingeastbay.org (reposted)
Community Launches Boycott of Woodfin Suites Hotel
Just 10 days before Christmas, the Woodfin Suites hotel in Emeryville fired 21 immigrant workers who have been involved in a campaign to enforce the city’s living wage law. On Friday, December 15th, Woodfin management placed the workers on two weeks suspension with pay and terminated them effective December 29 due to Social Security “no-matches.”

This heartless action is the latest in a national wave of mass firings of immigrant workers – many union workers or workers organizing for their rights – justified by Social Security “no-matches.” On December 12th, over a thousand workers in six Swift and Company meatpacking plants were arrested in a raid by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In November, 400 workers were fired by Cintas, a national laundry chain with plants in the Bay Area. Yet, Social Security “no-match” letters provide no legal basis for taking adverse action against an employee.

At a rally on Monday, dozens of community organizations will join with the workers to announce a boycott of the Woodfin Suites. Boycott endorsers include the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the Wellstone Democrats, the East Bay Gray Panthers, and the East Bay Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice.

The workers will also seek an injunction to stop the retaliatory firings. A hearing is scheduled on Thursday in Alameda County Superior Court.

“What will we tell our children when they have no presents to open on Christmas?,” said Alma Cruz, a Woodfin housekeeper. “We’re worried about feeding our families, but we will not give up. The hotel thinks they can intimidate us because we are immigrants, but we will keep fighting for our rights.”

Forty-three workers signed a letter calling for a boycott to go into effect if the hotel fires any workers because of no-match letters. Now that the hotel has started the process of firing workers, this boycott will go into effect on Monday, December 18th.

Please sign on to build an economic incentive for the hotel to respect the workers. This is a critical part of the fight to win these jobs back!

Now that hotel management has followed up on threats to fire immigrant workers at the Woodfin Suites hotel, donations to the Living Wage Hardship fund are even more critical. This fund will be used to provide direct support to Woodfin employees when their two-weeks suspension pay runs out. Your contributions will be critical in helping these courageous workers feed their families and remain in the struggle.

By donating now, you can ensure that funds will be available immediately on December 29th, when the firings become official. This money will be used to meet the critical needs of workers and their families for rent, food, and utilities as they fight to win their jobs back.

§end a letter to Samuel Hardage, the CEO of the Woodfin Suites

Workers standing up for their rights at the Woodfin Hotel in Emeryville have recently been threatened with mass firings. These workers are struggling to save their jobs, and are in urgent need of support from the community.

Why are they being threatened? They are simply asking for their due under the new living wage law in Emeryville that EBASE and Emeryville residents campaigned for and was passed by the voters. They also happen to be immigrants.

Workers are counting on your continued support to protect their jobs and show the Woodfin that our community will not tolerate harassment and intimidation of immigrant workers. Please send a letter to Samuel Hardage, the CEO of the Woodfin Suites, to tell him that you stand in support with the workers.
