Sacramento Peace Activists Demand that Governor Bring California Guard Home!
The Sacramento Catholic Worker House and local peace activists will hold a rally and march in Sacramento on Friday, December 15 demanding that the CA. National Guard be returned from Iraq immediately.
The peace advocates will rally briefly at 10:30 a.m. at the Peace Garden at the State Capitol (15th & M/Capitol.) They will then march to the Governor's Office to demand a meeting with Arnold Schwarzenegger. There may be civil disobedience.
Long time peace and social justice activists Dan and Chris Delaney of the Sacramento Catholic Worker House are organizing the protest. Members of other local peace groups will also be participating.
“We are demanding that Governor Schwarzenegger take a public position that now is the time to bring the California National Guard home,” said Dan Delaney. “We want the troops to be withdrawn starting now. Enough is enough. The U.S already has enough blood on its hands.”
Delaney added, “Even under Saddam Hussein, there weren’t as many people being killed as there are now in Iraq. Many more people are dying every day because of George Bush’s blunder in Iraq. Why should the California Guard be complicit in the killing?”
Nearly 6,000 of the 20,000 members of the California Guard have been deployed to Iraq. A total of 275 Californians have already died in Iraq, including 21 members of the California National Guard.
Despite the tremendous toll that the war has taken on the California National Guard and the people of Iraq, Governor Schwarzenegger has stood steadfastly behind G.W. Bush. The Governor has previously stated that the war in Iraq is “the right thing to do.”
Cindy Sheehan of Gold Star Mothers for Peace, Medea Benjamin of Code Pink, Gubernational Candidate Phil Angelides, Assemblywoman Loni Handock and many other political leaders have called for the withdrawal of the California Guard from Iraq.
