Hundreds of union members protested the ferry service that shuttles tourists to Alcatraz and asked people Saturday to skip the popular destination. The protest against Hornblower Cruises & Events, a nonunion employer that took over the ferry service in September, drew more than 600 supporters to the operator's Pier 33 offices, police estimated. Protesters included members of the Inland Boatmen's Union of the Pacific, a division of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, and of the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots. A Hornblower representative said the protest had no effect on Saturday's business.
