As the Peace and Freedom Party begins planning for the 2008 Presidential campaign, it is launching a national campaign to recruit “Supporting Members” to strengthen the party’s base in California and around the country. The broad non-sectarian socialist party is the largest socialist organization in the United States, with some 60,000 registered members in California.

Thousands of new members have been registered in recent years, most having formerly been registered to vote as Democrats or Republicans. In the November 2006 elections, over a million votes were recorded for Peace and Freedom candidates, and its California ballot status is secure for another four years.

Stewart Alexander, the newly-appointed National Membership Campaign Coordinator for the Peace and Freedom Party, reports that the membership campaign will target workers, students and people who support the party’s push for a single-payer health care system that will cover everyone. “The working class has been hit hard under Republican and Democratic leadership, and millions have lost faith in the leadership of the corporate parties. We think working people are ready to listen to what the Peace and Freedom Party is offering.”

The Peace and Freedom Party has introduced the membership campaign at reasonable and affordable rates. Supporting members will pay $20 in annual dues, with $10 being the student and low income rates. The party’s support for free education from preschool through the university will be emphasized in recruiting students on campus. Campus recruitment will involve both voter registration and signing up Supporting Members.

“We get no money from the corporations, millionaires or billionaires,” says Alexander. Small donations and membership dues will help us expand the Peace and Freedom Party and activate our voters. We have just begun a national search for Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates for 2008, and for people around the country who want to work on that campaign. Supporting Members will play an important role in that process to select potential candidates.”
