Education Not Incarceration Supports Oaxaca Uprising and 11/20 Solidarity Actions

by Education Not Incarceration (ednotinc [at] riseup.net)
We, Education Not Incarceration, want to emphasize the connection
between growing incarceration rates in the United States, which
often result from job-lessness caused by globalization of the
workforce, and the poverty and uprising against neo-liberalism
by the people of Oaxaca. In Mexico people are forced to work
and live in extreme poverty conditions, resulting from free-trade laws
that enable US corporations to extract human and natural
resources from Mexico without any protections on the people or
the land. The uprising in Oaxaca began with a teacher strike.

Following the call put out by the Zapatistas for a nationwide general
strike in Mexico on November 20th, actions have been planned
internationally. In San Francisco activists are calling for a
convergence and critical mass at 4pm at the Mexican Consulate
(532 Folsom at 2nd Street). In Santa Cruz there will be a rally
at noon at Quarry Plaza. A complete list of actions nationwide
is below and at
http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2006/11/19/18331016.php

The November 20th actions fall on the same day where Obrador,
the candidate who lost the summer elections to fraud, is to be
inaugurated by his supporters. Women, Political Parties,
Barricades and Autonomy by Barucha Calamity Peller. Meanwhile
the Oaxacan Attorney General has blamed APPO for the death of
Indymedia journalist and anarchist Brad Will.

"On November 20, blockades will be set up to show the Mexican
government we mean business. We are calling upon YOU
to join in these blockades. That could mean blockading the
consulates’ websites, jamming their phone lines with calls about the
conflict in Oaxaca, occupying the offices of the consuls,or shutting
down
the roads around the consulates in whatever way you see fit." What
started
out as a teachers strike nearly six months
ago in the city of Oaxaca in southern Mexico has transformed
itself into a full blown rebellion against neo-liberal
economics and capitalist domination.

Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets and
thousands of barricades have been set up by popular assemblies
demanding autonomy and the resignation of the governor of the state.
The
federal government and paramilitary forces have attacked and
invaded the city of Oaxaca in hopes of defeating the uprising, but the
people of Oaxaca have fought back and won several of the battles.
Already
dozens of people (including American journalist Brad Will) have been
murdered or been kidnapped by government thugs, and federal troops are
massing inside and around the city of Oaxaca to try to
defeat this rebellion.

Mexican and international media have been silent about the massacres
already committed by state forces. However, solidarity actions
inside and outside of Mexico will not only show the people of
Oaxaca that they are not alone, but also that we will hold the
Mexican government responsible for the bloodshed.

Worldwide Direct Action in Support of Oaxaca on November 20
http://elenemigocomun.net/391

On October 27, paramilitaries in Oaxaca, Mexico murdered
Indymedia journalist Brad Will. He is one of dozens who
have lost their lives at the hands of pro-government
forces while participating in the largely nonviolent
resistance to government oppression in that region.
Mexican president Vicente Fox used Brad’s death as a
pretext to send 4,000 federal police into the city of
Oaxaca; these forces are systematically brutalizing
the population.

The people of Oaxaca have not backed down – through days
of courageous fighting, they have managed to protect their
radio station at the university, repelling machine gun
wielding armored police with only sticks, stones, and hope.
On November 5, tens of thousands marched through the streets
of Oaxaca, calling for the federal police to leave.

The only reason that hundreds more have not yet been killed
in Oaxaca is that the Mexican government fears the response
that would engender in Mexico and across the world. Those
who have organized solidarity demonstrations at Mexican
consulates can congratulate themselves on helping, however
slightly, to deter the Mexican government from ordering a
bloodbath.

That bloodbath will still take place, however, unless we
continue to escalate the pressure upon President Fox’s
government to withdraw federal forces from Oaxaca. The
EZLN has announced that it will help coordinate a
nationwide shut-down on November 20. This must be
matched with international actions to show that the
world has not taken its eyes off Oaxaca, that on the
contrary, the mobilization in support of those who
struggle there is only gathering momentum.

On November 20, blockades will be set up to show the
Mexican government we mean business. We are calling
upon YOU to join in these blockades. That could mean
blockading the consulates’ websites, jamming their
phone lines with calls about the conflict in Oaxaca,
occupying the offices of the consuls, or shutting down
the roads around the consulates in whatever way you
see fit.

If we do not show Vicente Fox that paramilitaries and
federal forces cannot brutalize Oaxaca with impunity,
the blood of an entire murdered resistance movement
will be on our hands. Now is the time to act in
solidarity with those who struggle in Oaxaca, in
solidarity with the Zapatistas who have called on
us to support them, and in solidarity with all who
struggle against government and capitalism across the world.

Actions are already being planned in cities around the US.
Please plan actions in yours.

Yes, neo-liberalism is a problem but poverty and the southern Mexico rural crisis existed long before NAFTA. I hope you guys aren't supporting Mexican nationalism as the antedote because it's a con job.
