Ballot Measures

Measure Endorsement Website
Proposition 1B: Transit and Clean Air Bond Vote Yes (none)
Proposition 1B, the Highway Safety, Traffic Reduction, Air Quality and Port Security Bond Act of 2006, is a $19.9 billion bond that will fund vital projects to improve traffic safety, reduce congestion, repair local streets and roads, expand public transit, reduce air pollution, and facilitate the movement of goods and services. Specifically, $4 billion will go to repair, modernize, and expand public transportation; and $1.2 billion to reduce air pollution by repairing outdated port equipment and replacing older, high-polluting school buses. Vote Yes on Prop 1B.

Proposition 1C: Smart Growth and Affordable Housing Bond Vote Yes website
Proposition 1C will create affordable homes—within existing resources—without raising taxes. Providing affordable housing helps take pressure off of undeveloped open spaces and rural areas and reduces exceedingly long commutes and traffic gridlock. Prop. 1C will also encourage a smarter approach to growth by providing incentives to build new in-town housing on vacant city lots and to build homes and offices near rail and bus stations. Vote Yes on Prop 1C.

Proposition 84: Park Bond Vote Yes website
Proposition 84, the Clean Water, Parks and Coastal Protection Act, makes the investments needed to ensure that all Californians will have: access to safe drinking water; better protection from floods; and opportunities to enjoy parks, natural landscapes and our rivers, lakes, beaches, bays and coastline. Current funding for natural resources and environmental protection programs is critically low. In fact, funding for resources makes up less than 1% of the overall state budget. Prop. 84 will help our investment in infrastructure keep pace with our population growth. Vote Yes on Prop 84.

Proposition 87: Clean Energy Vote Yes website
Proposition 87 requires oil companies to pay California for the cost of extracting oil in the state (known as a “severance tax”). California is the only oil-producing state in the country that does not have a severance tax. Prop. 87 will raise $4 billion for projects and research with the goal of reducing petroleum consumption by 25% over 10 years. Petroleum use reduction would be achieved by funding alternative transportation fuels, energy efficiency and renewable energy. Proposition 87 specifies that the tax “shall not be passed on to consumers.” Vote Yes on Prop 87.

Proposition 90: Taxpayer Trap Vote NO website
Read our special section on Proposition 90. Prop 90 includes fine print that would erode our ability to pass laws that protect natural resources, wildlife and habitat; ensure water quality and adequate water supplies; and regulate growth and development. The far-reaching provisions allow virtually anyone to sue claiming a new law or regulation has impacted the value of their property or business - no matter how far-fetched the claim. These new "pay to protect" provisions mean taxpayers pay, or state and local governments would be unable to enact even the most basic protections of our environment and quality of life. Vote NO on Prop 90.

San Fran: Emergency Protest for Gaza 11/6 4PM SF
In light of the situation in Gaza, in Beit Hanoun
Join us in solidarity with the people of Palestine

Monday November 6th, 2006 - 4 PM
Israeli Consulate @ 465 Montgomery St.
(btwn Sacramento & California)
5PM Montgomery BART @ Market
San Francisco

In Gaza nearly 50 people including medical personnel, women and youth have
already been killed in the past five days in Israel's most recent offensive
against Gaza with no end in sight.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert pledged Sunday to press ahead with Israel's
offensive in northern Gaza, brushing off international calls to halt the
aggression and the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza - inadequate
electricity and medicine and dwindling supplies of water, food and other
staples. <http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-11-04-gaza_x.htm>

Stand in solidarity with the more than two hundred women of Beit Hanoun who
were shot at with live ammunition during a nonviolent demonstration on
Friday, killing two women, and wounding numerous others.
<http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6112386.stm>

Red Crescent Society volunteers throughout the West Bank took to the streets
in nonviolent demonstrations on Sunday in Ramallah, Tulkarem, Jericho, Jenin
and Nablus to honor the two 17-year-old paramedics who were killed in Beit
Hanoun last week.
<http://english.pnn.ps/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=934&Itemid=1>

Please join us in supporting the people of Palestine and in protesting the
Israeli aggression against the people of Beit Hanoun and the siege of Gaza!

This is an initiative of a number of individuals involved with different
Palestine solidarity groups in the Bay Area including Women in Black, Break
the Siege and the International Solidarity Movement.

We'll meet at Seaflow's seaside office at 6:45 p.m. Please be punctual! Scroll below for directions, meeting highlights and upcoming events.

Community Meeting Highlights:

Welcome circle with Doreen Gurrola at 7 p.m.

For the last 16 years, she has been leading whale watch expeditions locally and internationally. Come learn about the many whale and dolphin species that inhabit our coastal waters and deep sea habitats. Learn about the deep diving beaked whales, the shy harbor porpoises, and the colossal blue whale. In TMMC's classroom, explore the many marine mammal specimens, including baleen, bones and teeth.

RADICAL LOVE WORKSHOP Thu Nov 9 7:00 PM Hosted by Kinky Salon
Mission Control, 2519 Mission @ 21st, San Francisco
$20, sliding scale, everyone welcome
http://www.kinkysalon.com/

Workshop Description:
At a time when our nation is determined to keep us on the warpath, what better time to raise our voices against intolerance, hatred, and violence? At a time when our government propels us into a new dark age of fascism, what better time to talk about radical love, or the right to love who we want, how we want, and as many as we want? Loving openly and freely in these times, whether you are straight or queer, is a brave political act. We have been conditioned by outdated social norms that limit our perceptions and shackle us to unhealthy cycles of dissatisfying relationships. Yet we also live in a time when we can choose our gender and redefine our sexual identities. Don’t we then have the right to decide what kind of relationship best suits our lifestyle? Declare yourself a revolutionary of the heart. Find out how you can expand your potential to love, transform your lifestyle, and together we can threaten the social forces of patriarchy!

Wendy-O Matik is the author of Redefining Our Relationships: Guidelines for Responsible Open Relationships. As an educator, role model, and spokesperson for the polyamory community, Wendy has become a revolutionary activist of the heart. Since the release of her book, she has taught over sixty Radical Love & Relationship Workshops globally, excavating important social trends and reshaping the future of alternative relationship models for the 21st century. As an activist for social change, Wendy is pushing the boundaries on firmly rooted notions in mainstream society on relationships, love, gender, sexual equality, and sexual politics. She is available for educational and motivational discussions on the topic of alternative relationship models and responsible non-monogamy.

Fri, Nov 10, 8:00 pm Film: Our Synthetic Sea
Humanist Hall 390 27th St (Between Telegraph Avenue and Broadway)
Oakland http://globalexchange.org/getInvolved/bayarea.php

Our Synthetic Sea, Geologist M. King Hubbert, who discovered peak oil, identified the fact that we do not have an energy crisis but a culture crisis. He wrote: “Our culture is built on growth and that phase of human history is almost over and we are not prepared for it. Our biggest problem is not the end of our resources. That will be gradual. Our biggest problem is a cultural problem. We don’t know how to cope with it.” Jan Lundberg is determined to find out how to cope and publishes his newsletter “Culture Change” as a forum for helpful ideas to get people through the culture crisis that’s ahead for Western civilization. Our house-of-cards economy may actually not recover from what might be the Final Energy Crisis. Our culture WILL change; the question is, how will we adjust. Jan Lundberg’s Culture Change organization shows us a good way to reach a positive future, beyond our current plague of plastic and petrocollapse. For the Earth to survive, our future must be more organic, less plastic since plastic debris is filling up the world’s oceans. It should be known that plastic has a stranglehold on our water planet. This short, but very disturbing documentary, Our Synthetic Sea, graphically exposes our addiction to a lightweight, disposable lifestyle -- and the consequences. See the plastic menace in the California coast and watershed. The Pacific Gyre region is revisited to document the mid-ocean pelagic sea creatures and how some are infested with plastic particles. See the plastic fragments ingested by fledgling Albatross in Hawaii’s remote Coral Reserve, a formerly pristine region now heavily contaminated with plastic debris. http://www.culturechange.org Donations Accepted

Scientific Method Applied to World Trade Center Disaster: Nov 11th, UC Berkeley
http://sanfrancisco.tribe.net/listing/99dadece-65d0-4ea0-9076-5930a8ecbf21

The Lifting the Fog Conference will provide a focused, principled, and rigorous examination of the many unanswered questions surrounding the destruction of the World Trade Center skyscrapers. Using the extensive bodies of surviving evidence that document these events, Conference presenters will apply the time-tested scientific method to evaluate the evidence and theories of the destruction of the buildings.

In addition to tackling the controversial questions of what brought the skyscrapers down, the Conference will provide a session devoted to the developing story of the public health catastrophe of exposures to the Ground Zero environment. The fact that the EPA allowed politics to eclipse science in their issuance of false assurances that the air was safe to breathe is a sobering example of the fallacy of trusting official conclusions regarding highly charged political events being used to justify wars.

Topic: "Surviving the Next Pandemic: Bird Flu and Other Emerging Infectious Diseases"

Leading public health authorities now predict as inevitable a pandemic of influenza, triggered by bird flu and expected to lead to millions of deaths around the globe. The influenza virus has existed for millions of years as an innocuous intestinal virus of wild ducks. What turned a harmless waterborne duck virus into a killer? In an engaging multimedia presentation, Dr. Michael Greger traces the human role in the evolution of this virus. In the face of the coming pandemic, Dr. Greger reveals what we can do to protect our families and what human society to can do to reduce the likelihood of such potential catastrophes in the future.
