School Beat: Supporting Public Education in the Voting Booth

by Lisa Schiff, Beyond Chron (reposted)
Election day, this year falling on Tuesday November 7th, is once again an extremely signification day for San Francisco's public schools. Voters will drastically shape the physical and political context of our school system as they select a Governor, San Francisco Board of Education members, and decide whether or not we will have sufficient funds to repair our school structures as legally mandated. Starting at the top, Schwarzenegger is once again donning the mantle of the education governor. This tactic was easy enough to predict, as was discussed previously in this column when he transformed his reimbursement of Proposition 98 legislatively required education funding to schools into a magnanimous infusion of surplus dollars. Just to be clear, the Governor's actions in the wake of the relatively healthy California budget was no act of generosity, but was merely a veiled effort to meet the minimum requirements of the law.
That's the line to tell everyone and anybody who for some impossible reason has decided that Schwarzenegger is someone on whom public education supporters can depend. While Angelides is not stirring much excitement, we know that the current governor should not be allowed to stay in office based on the way he has played with schools and education dollars like so many toys.

Moving down to the local level, we have the Board of Education race. Being on the school board for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is about one of the most difficult, thankless jobs to be had in this town, which means we should probably be appreciative that any sane people are running at all. These volunteer positions call for an incredible degree of financial, education, legal, and policy analysis skills, not to mention political sensitivity and a community orientation. Given those requirements, these positions should be full-time jobs not the volunteer gigs they currently are, but that is a challenge for another day.
