Tennessee’s Harold Ford Aims to Become First Black Senator From the South Since Reconstruc
One of the most closely watched races this election is in Tennessee. Representative Harold Ford is running against Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Majority Leader Bill Frist. The race has gotten increasingly close in recent weeks. Democrats hope that this seat will be one of the six seats needed to regain their majority.
Harold Ford is a five-term Democratic Congressman who comes from a political family – his father, Harold Ford Sr., served as a Congressman in the district currently represented by his son. Seven other Fords have also held political office in the state. If Ford is elected - he will be the first black Senator from a southern state since Reconstruction.
Mike Wenger joins me now from Washington, DC. He is the Acting Vice President for Communications at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

I understand the symbolic significance of possibly electing ''the first Black Senator from the South since reconstruction '' (and of becoming only the second Black Senator in the current Senate )
But he's only a few political inches from being a Republican . He supports the war in Iraq (albeit with typical D.P. crituque of HOW the war is being waged ) He uncritically supports the war in Afghanistan, supported the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, wants Cuba ''liberated'', etc. etc.
On the Domestic front he has never defended victims of Police Violence. Never called for prosecution of ''Killer Cops '' but of course is for the Death penality for the far less numerous ''cop killers''. Received the support of the leaders of Tennessee's small Labor movement but has bragged about his full support for ''Business community '' and has never backed a organizing drive, a strike etc.
He only ,if pressed , will reluctantly say that Abortions should remain legal but has done nothing to stop the almost total lack of avalibality of abortions in Tennessee. But there's one issue which he is passionate about , the most important issue of the 21 st century. stopping Gay marriages !
He's Black but he doesn't represent the interests of African-American, European-American or Latino Working people .
