Bay Guardian Bayview Brouhaha

by Paul Hogarth, Beyond Chron (reposted)
With the November election just two weeks away, a disturbing dispute has sapped enormous energy out of San Francisco progressives. More disquieting, it has generally pitted white progressives (the “Bay Guardian” crowd) against black homeowners who live in the Bayview.
While these two groups have worked in common cause in the past year to fight the Bayview Redevelopment plan, the fissures erupted after City Attorney Dennis Herrera invalidated the 33,000 signatures that would have challenged Bayview Redevelopment at the ballot box. In response to this sudden disenfranchisement, some Bayview activists poured their energy into passing Proposition 90 – which would not only limit eminent domain, but also make it impossible for the government to ever effectively regulate private property for the public good. This division became readily apparent at the September 27th march that was ostensibly organized to protest the City Attorney’s recent action. White progressive activists who attended the march to support Bayview residents were visibly shocked and angry, and felt naturally betrayed by their allies. But their gut reaction (treat the Bayview residents as clueless idiots) has done more harm than good – when a more appropriate target of their anger should be Prop 90 itself.

I chose the dates both to have the March from Williams Street to Palou on September 27 and then again the date, time, and place for the October 16, 2006 Rally at the steps of City Hall.

At the September 27, 2006 it was WRONG for those that initiated the Prop 90 issue on the stage. The main issue was the invalidation of the 33,400 signatures.

At the Oct 16, 2006 it was decided that Minister Christopher Muhammad would be the Speaker to set the tone. The other speakers were selected and chose on their own accord to focus on the issues at hand.

Let me make it clear to some White Media that Willie Ratcliff was NOT the chief organizer. We are a coalition of non-aligned individuals and organizations.

I had more say then Willie Ratcliff but I said some individuals chose to introduce the Prop 90 at the first gathering. At the second gathering they were kept at bay and wisely so.

Espanola Jackson has done a lot for our community and is a candidate for District 10. Dwayne Jusinho is another good candidate for District 10 and has strong support in the Portola and Silver Terrace area .

Rodney Hampton has the support of those constituents that he has worked hard with many young constituents in District 10.

Charlie Walker has his constituency and wants to make a run for District 10.

Sala-Haquekyah is another candidate and wants to represent District 10.

All the above candidates have lived continously in the Bayview Hunters Point. On the issues of making their abode in District 10 they have a track record.

As an advocate and close to issues at ground zero I understand the dynamics.

I have known the workings of the Bayguardian and SFChron too. While these two White driven entities are free to express themselves - let it be known they have NOT done through investigative reporting on the March 27 march and the Oct 16, rally as it pertain to one entity.

If they do not know who really led these two events to fruition. If they focus on issues that are not pertinent to the death of Mathew Johnson and the De-peopling of large areas they have missed the point.

Prop 90 is an issue that will come to bite City Hall and those that have deep pockets.

The present Eminent Domain laws, the Project Area Committee, the Survey Area leading to the Project Area, Tax Increment, High Density, and a host of other issues kept many of those now interested in our concerns at Bay.

Now, suddenly there is a lot of name calling, purporting to love " people of color " and so on and so forth. Stay away and forever hold your peace. Our movement puts little faith in the Media and Press that is tainted.

Much before you folks cared to understand our issues I spelt in out for all to read and see. Only the blind and deaf may not have read or heard me loud and clear.

We will organize many more meetings and have many more of this, that, and the other - but we do it united and as a coalition. There is NOT one entity or one individual that leads the present MOVEMENT.

Shame on you for trying to divide the community.
