PLEASE VOLUNTEER OR INTERN WITH EDUCATION NOT INCARCERATION
(http://www.ednotinc.org)!
October 19, 2006
Dear Friend,
Education Not Incarceration (http://www.ednotinc.org) has continued to
grow at a rate that we could not have even imagined a year ago
as we build our organization and our campaign to empower youth
and stop them from being pushed from school into prison. We
currently have seven active chapters - Oakland, San Francisco
(our founding meeting was a huge success this past Saturday),
Los Angeles, Santa Rosa, Modesto, Fresno, and Redwood City.
In the last few weeks we have:
1.Begun to build partnerships with the San Francisco School Board,
the Santa Rosa School Board, the Fresno School District, and
Oakland's next Mayor, Ron Dellums transition team.
2. We are building a quickly expanding youth program to assure
that youth are at the center of our movement.
3. We have redeveloped our website, created a portfolio
4. Moved towards funding commitments for ENI, and are about to
launch a major membership/ grassroots fundraising drive.
5. We are building an exciting relationship with the National
Education Association (NEA) to assure NEA commitments to plan
a summit on ending the policy of taking away a child's education
as a means of discipline, implement a task force on “pushouts”,
and create a program to support the education of children of
prisoners. As a result of our work with them, the NEA has
just launched a 12-point plan to address pushouts (dropouts)
than can be viewed on their home page http://www.nea.org.
6. We are preparing a mailing helping many of the 70 cities
that have expressed interest in founding chapters to help
them begin that process.
To keep things moving we need your help!! Can you come into
the office a few hours a week or more and answer phone,
help with mailings, make membership phone calls, help start
chapters and follow up on support that they need, work to
build our NEA program, help develop our website further,
write a grant, share a skill with a youth organization or
school, coordinate our "Youth as Leaders" program, organize
the office, and so much more!
If you can help, please e-mail or mail us a little bit about
yourself, and what times you would be available, and the
type of work you are interested in doing. We need people
who are committed to being consistent in volunteer work and
who bring a professional attitude to your work.
People of color, women, migrants, LGBTQ, and working class
candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Send an e-mail to ednotinc [at] riseup.net, or mail information
to 3280 Morcom Ave, Oakland, CA 94619. Call 510.868.1870
with questions.
