An Affordable Studio, A View of the City, and Your First Private Kitchen in Years
Bruce Allison hasn’t had a private kitchen in five years – now he cooks spaghetti in his studio apartment. David Boyd hasn’t had a private kitchen in eight years – now he cooks chicken breasts and baked potatoes. Jennifer Washington hasn’t had a private kitchen since 1992 – now she cooks chicken, sweet potatoes and peas. And Bob Bowers, a lifelong bachelor who hasn’t had a private kitchen in 24 years and has lost the habit of cooking, has so far made “beef stew, rice and that old-fashioned Top Ramen.” All of them lived for years in SRO residential hotels, but have now made the long-awaited transition to affordable apartment-style living, thanks to the opening of the Sister Bernie Galvin Apartments. Yesterday, the Tenderloin Housing Clinic launched an Opening Ceremony for the Galvin Apartments on the new building’s rooftop at Seventh and Brannan – with 360-degree views of San Francisco’s skyline.
