A press conference was held on Wednesday, October 18 to announce upcoming events to stop police brutality and to support the homeless. The information below is the Press Release and photos from the press conference.

Torture, brutality, detentions, domestic spying, profiling, and other attacks on human and civil liberties have been made part of the routine of daily life that we are asked to accept without question. At airports, subways, transportation centers, and more we are asked to "welcome" bag searches, check points, invasion of privacy, stripping away of civil liberties, all in the name of "national security." Demonstrations and political protests are increasingly penned in, attacked, spied upon, videotaped, and outright denied by authorities. A former NSA intelligence agent, Russell Tice, warned that the nation was decaying into a "police state." The war abroad has its corresponding part in the war on people at home, where law enforcement agents step up their harassment and criminalization of certain neighborhoods and populations.
Here in Fresno, the City will pay $1.6m to settle lawsuit, Clovis couple alleged that a police officer used excessive force on them. The city will pay the settlement from its $2.5 million risk-management fund, which is used for liability cases, "It will drain it quite a bit," said Rhonda Jorn, the city's public information officer. Wonder how much is left to address continuing pending cases and claims against the FPD. "The magnitude of the settlement speaks for itself." Over the last 10 years, Fresno's annual police liability payments have varied wildly. In 1997, the city paid more than $1.3 million. In 2003, it paid a total of $54,920, according a city document. Fresno police continue to harass the homeless, profile Blacks, Browns and Yellow and Poor people. More than 38 people have been killed by Fresno Police since 1997.
The number doubled when Jerry Dyer became our chief of Police. In Reedley, the city tried to censor COPWATCH and learned the hard way that it's hard to violate our First Amendment Right to Observe. The attorneys offered to way their attorneys fee if the Police were order to learn about civil rights, the city refused, costing the residents of Reedley mucho dinero in attorneys fees.

witnessed a latino lower class man beaten nearly senseless on a bus by a tall anglo man. 5 police arrived but crushed the latino man to the ground. he was the one who was attacked by the anglo man!!. they crushed an innocent man! this was in santa clara , the santa clara california police dept. someone with expertise can contact santa clara police and research this somehow. it was a year and a half ago on ''22'' bus line in sata clara , about 3 0 clock in morning. at least 5 police were seen to crush this man to the ground. i witnessed the whole eveny and so did bus driver. it was an african american bus driver witnessed everything but he did nothing to tell police what happened. he could have prevented the ctushing assault on innocent man. many were on the bus. i didnt stick around because i hadnt recovered from being profiled and severely injured by police. pthis is not all i have witnessed in past 5 years. i have witnesed 8 beatings and violent progfiling to either black indian or women , and alternative living peoples. cannot ever trust police , its over.
I've had some personal experience with Fresno PD, and have heard too many horror stories. It's too bad, because I'm sure there are some good caring officers, and I can imagine their job is really hard sometimes and stressful. But I'm also pretty sure there's a good proportion of power/control-trip abusive cops too. Heard a story about someone being set up by cops and had dope planted. Heard a story from a young woman whose fiance was killed by a gang member-she believes it was a set-up/cover-up, he was supposed to be responding a to domestic dispute(?) Did not have back-up. She believes it was retaliatory because he was a "whistle-blower" against corrupt cops who steal dope/evidence, plant it on others, brag about it, etc. She was subsequently treated like dirt and like a nut-case by FPD, including JD.
I have read and heard about the alleged police brutality in America. I just recently read about the suspect who was beaten repeatedly in the face while resisting arrest. I think there are some bad police officers in America. I mean the ones who take money from drug dealers to stay off their backs and the ones who don’t review the situation before acting out. Those are the police officers who need to be reprimanded, however; the stories that I hear about a group of cops taking down a suspect and he gets hurt or the perpetrators who resist arrest and get hurt I have no remorse for. I really don’t have any remorse for anyone who breaks the law and suffers the consequences by possibly getting a bloody nose or a broken bone or even shot. If they didn’t want to suffer the consequences they don’t need to break the law. For instance if a man broke into your home and threatened the lives or your family you would hope that the police would do everything, and I mean EVERYTHING necessary to take him down. You wouldn’t care if the person died while they were doing it. I know for a fact that there is no one in the world who would say, “Don’t hurt him they didn’t mean to break in and attempt to harm me.” No you would say get his ass he tried to harm me and my family. I know down south where I’m from we wouldn’t wait for the police. A man breaks into my house I am the law and that is the same situation. A police officer should, in my opinion do everything necessary to protect himself or herself, and the people. Thank you and have a nice day.
I have one thing to say to the homeless, GET OF YOUR REAR AND GET A JOB, any job there is always someone who will hire you to wash dishes or take out the trash for some money. You can get enough money to clean yourself up and take a bath and that could lead you to get a better job like a cook or a busboy or something like that so you can get off the streets or out of the homeless shelter and get a trailer or something small to live in. I have a saying that I always stick by and it pertains to the homeless and others like them. I won't help anyone who want help themselves. Im not takeing my hard earned money that I worked for just to throw it into the homeless pile for someone who drank or doped themselve out of their home. That is rediculous and down right insane to do. SO GET OFF YOUR BUTTS AND MAKE SOMETHING OF YOURSELF. You can do little steps and walk into bigger steps you just have to take innitiative. So I don't think there should be an organization to help them I think they should help themselves. Quit swimming in the alchohol and shooting up with dope and

Aside from that, I'd like for you to put yourself in the shoes of a person who IS trying to get off the streets [how can you judge if someone is trying to do that or not? would you let someone who is homeless but has a job (also called "the working poor") come in and use your shower and washing machine so they can go to work? I doubt it]:
what is that person going to make sweeping a storefront? 2 bucks?
say that leads to a full-time job at a restaurant, say for $8 an hour. That's what, $260 a week takehome, or so, after taxes? At that rate, if the person didn't have to pay for things like meals, clothes, a cellphone, transportation (bus, bike, or car), healthcare, cigarettes (let's face it, a lot of people smoke), chewing gum, rent in a hotel, things women need when they have their period, makeup (in some jobs it is required that you wear it), condoms and lube (let's face it, people have sex sometimes, and why not protect yourself against STD's and pregnancy?), haircuts, etc, if they had no expenses and just saved it, it would take at least 6 weeks to have money for rent and a deposit on an apartment (and maybe some left over to get a bed). But if they do have all those expenses, how are they supposed to get by, never mind save up money for a place to live?
Now, hopefully, you can understand why there are so many organizations out there that are dedicated to helping people who are poor, homeless, mentally ill, etc. Even if you can do a lot of things for yourself, it is very hard to support yourself when you are starting with nothing.
