Painter and Sculptor Rodney McMillian Gives Public Lecture November 1
SFAI Fall 2006 Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series Lecture Hall San Francisco Art Institute 800 Chestnut Street Campus November 1, 2006, 7:30pm free and open to the public Los Angeles-based artist Rodney McMillian makes conceptually informed paintings, sculptures, and videos that have been described as combinations of Abstract Expressionism, Old Master painting, and Duchampian ready-mades. Thematically, his works address absence and enigma, though, as critic James Scarborough has written, “His take on absence is more sensuous than cerebral.” McMillian has made numerous works from scavenged mattresses, battered stuffed furniture, and stained, drearily colored carpet—materials that are often quite literally haunted with the residue of human experience. McMillian has been featured in major group exhibitions including Frequency at Studio Museum in Harlem; Uncertain States of America at Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo; Thing: New Sculpture from Los Angeles at the UCLA Hammer Museum; and Painting in Tongues at MOCA, Los Angeles. Credit SFAI's Public Programs are supported in part by the Grants for the Arts / San Francisco Hotel Tax fund. SFAI's Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series is co-sponsored by InSight. Through educational activities, community outreach, volunteer opportunities and social programming, InSight’s mission is to advance the visibility and promote the success of SFAI in the Bay Area community and beyond.
