Sacto Anti-Occupation/Anti-Angelides Demo

Date:
Saturday, September 30, 2006
Time:
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Event Type:
Protest
Organizer/Author:
Stephen Pearcy
Location Details:
All four corners of the intersection of 16th & Broadway, IN SACRAMENTO

Hello everyone:

Please join us at 16th & Broadway this Saturday (Sept. 30th), from 5:30pm to 7:30pm to protest the deplorable U.S. military occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Israeli military's criminal occupations (still) of Lebanon and Palestine.

Additionally, please come to show support for your favorite Peace and Freedom Party or Green Party candidates, and to demonstrate our collective NON-support for the "business-as-usual" Democratic candidates, such as Phil Angelides.

Of the 21 anti-war demonstrations that we've had at 16th & Broadway since last year--some of which involved over 400 people (including Cindy Sheehan), many of which involved over 200 people, and virtually all of which involved over 100 people--Phil Angilides NEVER attended a single event, notwithstanding that he lives right down the street.

Recently, however, Angelides called for a "Rally Against the War." Suddenly he's decided to hold himself out as the "anti-war candidate." This is not only insincere, but it's a truly disgusting effort to adopt what is now an overwhelmingly popular position. Where was Angelides on those 21 Saturday afternoons when we stood in the sun protesting the war? Where was he when we were protesting the war outside of the Sacramento Convention Center at the Democratic Convention?

Angelides is a fake! In fact, thanks to AIPAC, the entire Democratic Party is just as culpable as the Republicans have been in allowing--indeed, supporting--ALL of the occupations mentioned above. Both parties are also guilty of perpetuating the pro-law enforcement (and, thus, anti-civil rights) movement, both locally and nationally. In fact, Angelides continues to boast in his ads about how many cop unions support him. Well, folks, I guarantee you: cop unions DO NOT endorse candidates who seek to expand civil rights.

Democratic and Republican candidates remain at the mercy of the pro-police, pro-military and pro-business lobbies. Nothing will change until we recognize this and act upon it by bringing a third party to the forefront.

Again, please come out to 16th & Broadway this Saturday, from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm, and join the folks who have been outspoken against the occupations all along, and come out to support non-Democrat and non-Republican candidates.

Please spread the word and bring any compelling signs, displays, banners, or attention-getters (for/against any specific candidates or parties or with messages opposing any of the occupations).

We look forward to seeing you.

Stephen & Virginia Pearcy
