"Riot Act" Rotkin got his name in 1993 after he threatened to arrest me for using the names of Councilmembers in a speech.
He's running for his 6th term, the ultimately recycled candidate.
At the Tuesday Downtown Neighbors Association/Santa Cruz Neighbors forum, he openly bragged of "rounding up four votes" for measures at City Council (a violation of the Brown Act which forbids such out-of-sight lobbying by Councilmembers). He also expressed pride that his Council had often passed measures opposed by a majority of those members of the public speaking at City Council.
Kenyatta is the only candidate talking about low-income people in the race as well as the only candidate of color. He talked about consensus, community, and talking out problems downtown (presumably as an alternative to the anti-homeless Downtown Ordinances). He was the only candidate to express reservations about the police.
At the Tuesday forum, no candidate used the "h" word, and my question about the homeless and the sleeping ban was not asked by the forum hosts. The forum was videoed by Community Television, and will be aired later.
To talk with Kenyatta and Rotkin, call in at 831-427-3772 and ask the hard questions. Hear the slick answers.
The show broadcasts at 101.1 FM and streams at http://www.freakradio.org. It will be archived at http://www.huffsantacruz.org.
Lynn Robinson, Chris Cobb, and (possibly) Cynthia Mathews have also agreed to come on FRSC to shower us with their wisdom. Stay tuned and sharpen your claws.
It's a dismal race with a dismal turnout of candidates.
