AFRICAN DIASPORA CINEMA

African Diaspora Cinema - Celebrating Afro-centric and ethnic cultures in World Cinema one Sunday a month at The Parkway Theater, 1834 Park Blvd., Oakland, CA, presented by Taylor Fischer.
$5 admission all ages – Post screening discussions at each show.
Films presented on big screen VHS or DVD

African Diaspora Film Society Mission is to:
l. Provide the opportunity for people to better understand and know each other using films made by African/African Diaspora filmmakers and films made about the African/African Diaspora as the vehicle;

2. Support African/African Diaspora filmmakers to help assure their integrity;

3. Build a sustainable relationship between people and African/African Diaspora filmmakers;

4. Develop a web of venues where films made by independent African American, African and African Diaspora filmmakers can be viewed and discussed on a continuous schedule; and

5. Entertain


BLACK PANTHER PARTY FILM FESTIVAL

2-4pm:

“A Panther in Africa” running time 86 minutes, a film by Aaron Matthews, DVD

This movie tells the story of Pete and Charlotte O’Neal, former Black Panthers from Kansas City who have been in exile since 1970 and have built a school and community center in their village. They have continued to carry on the principles of the Black Panther Party all these years and provide a viable resource for the people in their village.


Also included: an 8 minute work in progress on Richard Aoki by Ben Wong, DVD. Richard Aoki, a Japanese American member of the Black Panther Party, talks about his experience, especially the early days and his relationship to Huey Newton, Bobby Seale and the early development of the BPP.

And: “Sooner or Later, Someone’s Gonna Fight Back”, running time 17 minutes, by Bryce White, VHS format. This is a work in progress and is the story of the Louisiana Chapter of the Black Panther Party in New Orleans. It contains interviews and actual historical footage.

5-7pm:

“Streetfighter in the Courtroom”, VHS, running time 58 minutes. This is a documentary about Charles Garry, renowned attorney for the Black Panther Party and other high profile, progressive cases. Charles Garry represented Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale and Ericka Huggins in New Haven, and Eldridge Cleaver among others.

“Oakland Community School” DVD, 1977, running time 30 minutes. This film is about the Black Panther Party’s Oakland Community School and other Survival Programs, such as the Free Clinic and the Senior SAFE Escort program. This film is narrated by Kellita Smith when she was 8 years old. She is now the actress who plays Bernie Mac’s wife on his show and she attended the school.

Also: a 20 minute trailer of a soon to be released documentary on the Angola 3 – “3 Black Panthers & the Last Slave Plantation” narrated by Mumia Abu Jamal, DVD
