San Francisco Hotel Workers Deserve A Fair Contract
Here are some snapshots taken in the late afternoon of the latest Local 2 Action in front of the Westin St. Francis at Union Square.
According to literature handed out at this action site (my emphasis):
"We cook the food, clean the rooms, and make the beds for the guests here in San Francisco. We've been without a contract for TWO YEARS.
After our contract expired in 2004, the San Francisco Multi-Employer Group (MEG), locked 4,300 Workers at 14 hotels out of their jobs for two months. Now, two years later, the hotels are still threatening huge healthcare cuts, trying to subcontract jobs, and ignoring critical workload issues that affect our HEALTH AND SAFETY.
We're fighting for five basic things:
1. AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE FOR WORKERS, FAMILIES, AND RETIREES.
2. WORKLOAD PROTECTIONS TO PREVENT SERIOUS INJURY ON THE JOB
3. MODEST WAGE INCREASES THAT MEET THE RISING COST OF LIVING
4. RIGHTS FOR NON-UNION WORKERS TO CHOOSE A UNION FREELY
5. DECENT PENSIONS SO WORKERS CAN RETIRE WITH DIGNITY.
Workers at the following hotels voted 93% to authorize a strike, if necessary, to achieve DIGNITY and RESPECT on the job (these are the Hotels that are a problem):
Crowne Plaza
Fairmont
Four Seasons
Grand Hyatt
Hilton San Francisco
Holiday Inn Civic Center
Holiday Inn Fisherman's Wharf (& Expr.)
Hyatt Regency
Mark Hopkins
Omni San Francisco
Sheraton
Palace
Westin St. Francis
