Chilean Students Again Take the Streets
In Valparaiso, on September 5, 2006, students attacked police in remembrance of the 1973 military coup. Next Monday, September 11, marks the 33rd anniversary of the coup d'etat in Chile that ushered in a 17-year dictatorship under former General Augusto Pinochet . More than 3,000 people died or disappeared because of political violence during Pinochet's rule between 1973-1990. (REUTERS)
Chilean Students Again Take the Streets
Prensa Latina, Cuba
Santiago de Chile, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) - Hundreds of Chilean secondary students went out again on the capital streets in an unauthorized protest Tuesday, demanding better schools and real changes in education.
Protesters blocked traffic with barricades, while special police forces launched teargas and used water hoses against them, and in the Maipu community there were strong confrontations with the police with an undisclosed, but high, number of arrests and a great deal of dangerous material left in public places and stores.
The action, which began peacefully last night and the early hours of this morning, during the commemoration of the electoral win of late President Salvador Allende in 1970, turned raucous with young people throwing rocks at local stores; six of them were arrested at that time.
The students complain that the Advisory Board, created by President Michele Bachelet after the huge student mobilizations in May and June, has not come up with the promised reforms of the educational system.
