Peace in the Middle East Demonstration at 16th & Broadway in Sacramento on August 26th
A small number (<100) of local political activists gathered at 16th & Broadway on Saturday evening, August 26th to protest the continued U.S. occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, the continued Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, the kidnapping and continued detention of democratically elected Palestinian leaders and the Bush administration's pro-war policies.
A small number (<100) of local political activists gathered at 16th & Broadway on Saturday evening, August 26th to protest the continued U.S. occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, the continued Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, Israel's kidnapping and continued detention of democratically elected Palestinian leaders belonging to the Hamas Party, Bush's pro-war policies and to show support for Hezbollah.
The event was sponsored by:

COALITION FOR JUSTICE FOR IMMIGRANTS
UNION CIVICA PRIMERO DE MAYO
PEOPLE OF COLOR FOR RACIAL JUSTICE
This demonstration included most of the "core group" in addition to quite a few new faces. Absent were the "protest warriors" and the pro-Israel group who were present at the last demonstration. Unfortunately, it appears that some of the sponsoring organizations failed to have representatives or members in attendance. The response from passing motorists was mixed.
The event was not without controversy. A young Jewish woman and a small group of individuals, whom appeared to be from a single family and who also identified themselves as being Jewish, showed up to complain about some of the imagery and flags being displayed. In particular, they objected to the use of swastikas on a few of the anti-Israeli and anti-AIPAC displays. At one point, the young Jewish woman could be observed debating with Steve and Virginia Pearcy regarding the use of such imagery and Israeli foreign policy. However, the creator of one of the signs in question is himself Jewish and at least one other Jewish attendee stated that he didn't object to the use of swastikas in the displays.
It should be noted that although many participants are well aware of Israel’s human rights violations, many of us thought the use of swastikas was not a good idea for a number of different reasons.
Despite the controversy, the atmosphere was generally relaxed, friendly and remained completely peaceful.

I find it very telling that in your lead paragraph you failed to mention the zionazi bombing and invasion of Lebanon.
In your final para, you say that "some of us" thought "it wasn't a good idea" to superimpose swastikas on the Star of David, "for various reasons".
Since you use the word "us", I guess that means that you yourself found the juxtaposition "not a good idea"? Since I made several signs with the motif you seem to find objectionable, I'd be very interested to know which of the "various reasons" led you to such a conclusion.
I think a clue can be found in your statement that "many participants are well aware" of the zionist entity's "human right violations".
That statement has to be in the running for understatement of the year.
That's like saying the murder of Emmet Till was a "civil rights violation".
War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity on a massive scale, maybe.
Even those legal terms don't capture the degree of Evil embodied by the zionist regime and its US Fifth Column, AIPAC et al aka "The Lobby".
As I was about to tell that smartass Isrealie zionist before he chickened out & split, my sources are the best: Theodor Herzl, Ussushkin, records of the Basel Conference, Chaim Weissman, Vladimir Jabotinsky, Ben Gurion, Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan, Moshe Sharett, Menachem Begin, Yitzak Shamir, Arik Sharon, Benny Morris, Steven Green and others.
All you have to do is read the words of the Zionist leaders themselves, then review what the zionist entity has actually DONE. You will see that it's all been the fulfilling of plans made long ago.
If you're still confused, maybe go back a little farther, to the great Bismark's Real Politik, and his philosophy of Blut & Boden -- "Blood & Soil" -- from which both Zionism and later, Nazism derive their philosophical basis.
Of course if your time is limited, you may want to jump to the chase? You could ask one of our local Palestinian-American friends to provide you with a copy of "Our Roots Are Still Alive".
Edward Said is pretty good. Abu Lughod's "The Transformation of Palestine" was a key for me; of course Naseer Aruri and Rashid Khalidi are always worth reading. Israel Shahak & Rabbi Elmer Berger are not to be missed.
Oh yes, do go to Ralph Schoenman's lecture at the Coloma this month: he's Jewish, ask him what he thinks about the "swastika of david";)
The point is to shake people awake to the true nature of this "Jewish State". The closest comparison I can make is to the Confederate States of America -- which also described itself as "a democracy".
Nobody seriously wants to "push the Jews into the sea". Nobody wants to see more human beings killed or injured. But...
"Israel" must be dismantled: the state structure, the legal system, the religious test for full citizenship rights, the institutionalized racism, the Militarist nature of the state -- all that has to go.
There is no hope of any "negotiated settlement" with these bastards, get that out of your mind. Anybody who continues to prattle about a "peace process" is just trying to con you.
Only after the power of the zionazi military machine is broken, decisively broken, will the rest of them become willing to be a little reasonable.
Either the zionazis will reduce all the Arabs on the planet to an animal level of existence, or the zionazi war & occupation machine will be destroyed.
Sorry, but that's just how it is.

I think that incorporating swastikas into anti-Israeli/anti-Zionist/anti-AIPAC displays is a bad idea for the following reasons:
1. Many people find this to be distasteful or offensive. Since WWII, the Swastika has become synonymous with Nazi Germany, and anti-Semitism. It is a favorite symbol of the Neo-Nazis and other hate groups. You suggest that displays incorporating such images will help "shock" people into realizing just how bad Israel is, but I think it will actually turn most people off to our messages.
2. People might conclude that at least some of us are anti-Semitic. Playing the "anti-Semitism" card is a favorite tactic of many Zionists for discrediting Israel's critics. Displaying swastikas plays right into their hands.

Only in America:)
Only in the US of A can you still find people other than open rightwingers & Zionists who utter such nonsense.
The truth is the truth: softpedalling it doesn't change it. The truth is that "isreal" stinks, and all who lend it any support stink too.
The zionist entity is the modern equivalent of the Third Reich, a sociopolitical fact all decent human beings need to get through their heads, and then need to proceed to erase from the map.
Now I waiting for you to say that calling for "izreal" to be wiped off the map is "antisemitic", or "could be interpreted" etc.
Hohum. It doesn't matter how you try to sugarcoat criticism of Isreal; the slightest hint of anything other than total enthusiasm will earn you the label "anti-Semite" anyway, so why not just say what you think?
This is what I think: the "Turd Reich" has to go, ASAP. The sooner the better, by any means available.
If this could be accomplished non-violently without harming any Israeli Jews, that would be wonderful. Unfortunately it's a pipedream, especially when dealing with such a violent, dehumanized bunch of folks.
So YES! In 2006, first of September, on the heels of the War Crimes against Lebanon, while the atrocities & Crimes Against Humanity continue in Gaza as we speak, the Star of David on the Isrealie flag is the exact equivalent of the Swastika on the flag of Deutschland in 1940.
You may not like the signs I made, but a lot of Palestinians love them. Actually I only made more than one because a couple of beautiful Palestinian ladies kept trying to talk me into giving them the first one;)
Take it easy,
Dan
