*What:* Fresno City Council hearing to vote on a ban against medical
marijuana dispensaries
*Where:* Fresno City Hall, 2600 Fresno Street, Fresno CA.
*When: *Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at 8:30am
*Why: *Voicing opposition to bans like Fresno's is critical to providing
access for patients and to stemming the tide of illegal bans taking
place across the state

*Background:*
On April 25, 2005, Americans for Safe Access filed a lawsuit against the
City of Fresno
<http://www.safeaccessnow.org/downloads/dispensary_complaint.pdf> for
banning dispensaries within its city limits. Fresno's affront to patient
access is symbolic of misinformed communities across California. It was
important then and it's still critically important for advocates to take
a stand against Fresno's and others' actions to obstruct much-needed
access for patients.

On August 22, 2006, more than a year after the lawsuit was filed, the
Fresno City Council introduced another ordinance that continues a ban
against dispensaries. The new proposed ordinance coming up for a vote
next Tuesday allows patients and advocates a rare opportunity to voice
opposition and work to overturn a ban against dispensaries in that city.
The new proposed ordinance requires that dispensaries and cooperatives
operate consistent with federal law. This renewed ban must be
highlighted and opposed!

Please speak out and tell the council that you support an ordinance in
Fresno, but that the proposed ordinance is a BAN and the provision about
consistency with federal law must be removed!
