Chronicle Attack on DBI Chief Ignores Facts

by Beyond Chron (reposted)
In its August 21 column alleging unethical behavior by DBI Chief Amy Lee, Chronicle columnists Matier & Ross continue a disturbing trend of getting key facts wrong. In this case, the columnists allege that Lee had a cash shortage that motivated her to ask Building Commissioner Roy Guinnane for a loan. But Lee told the Chronicle’s Phil Matier that she never had a cash shortfall. The Chronicle also reports that Lee used Guinnane’s money to pay her contractor, a claim that Lee flatly told Matier was false. Rather than print the truth, Matier acted as public relations flak for Guinnane and Residential Builders head Joe O’Donoghue, both of who want Lee to resign. Matier also ignored the crucial fact that the two-year old allegations about Lee arose as “payback” by a former DBI official that Lee fired for corruption. Rather than defend Lee from false attacks, the Chronicle has apparently joined O’Donoghue in pressuring one of San Francisco’s best and most ethical public servants into quitting. Fortunately, Lee will not bend to their will.
There was once a time when Chronicle columnists Matier & Ross produced some of the city’s best journalism. But either sloth or boredom has set in, as the columnists are now getting one story wrong after another.

The duo’s recent reign of error began on July 23 with its “expose” of Los Angeles’ alleged attempt to recruit the 49ers. On July 24, the duo revealed its previous days scoop was false, since the funding for a new Los Angeles stadium prevented it being used by a current team in California.

On August 16, the column claimed that in a meeting between San Francisco school officials and major landlords, that longtime Coalition for Better Housing representative Jack Davis “barked” at his clients “and they jumped like trained Chihuahuas." Great metaphor, but the incident never happened. Not only does Davis dispute the Chronicle’s claim, but anyone familiar with Davis and CBH would know that he would never demean them in a public meeting. Davis and CBH have a close relationship of mutual respect, but turning Davis into a dog-trainer made a better story.
