Location Details:
On Saturday, August 19th, a candlelight vigil will be held at Willard Park in Berkeley (Derby Way east of Telegraph Ave) from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. for Abeer Hamza, a young Iraqi girl raped and killed along with her family in mid-March by U.S. occupation forces in Iraq. August 19, 2006 would have been Abeer's 15th birthday. In early July, four U.S. soldiers and one ex-soldier were charged with these crimes.
Vigils are planned in Berkeley, New York, Los Angeles, Denver, and Bellingham, Washington. The Berkeley, New York, and Los Angeles vigils have been organized by a group of 8 young women who were outraged and saddened by Abeer's story, and who have never organized in such a way before. The event is endorsed by Not In Our Name, and sponsored by Amnesty International, CODEPINK, A.N.S.W.E.R. LA, and American Muslim Voice. This is a "we will not be silent" vigil; organizers hope that you will join us in honoring Abeer, her family, and the thousands of Iraqi civilians subjected to violence.
