ALERT FOR ANIMALS IN LEBANON
8-8-06 (8-13-06 repost)
From Jane Garrison & Linda Nealon
Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (BETA) has worked very hard to
rescue about 150 dogs and 100 cats off the streets in Beirut and the
surrounding areas. When their shelter was no longer safe, they created a
shelter at an abandoned pig farm in the mountains above Beirut. Even in the
middle of a war, BETA has been busy trying to get the necessary permits from
the city to house the dogs at this facility (they already have the
permission of the land owner). However, the police have visited the shelter
twice and threatened to shoot all the dogs if they are not moved. Just
yesterday morning the police arrived and said they were under orders from
the Minister of Interior, Ahmed Fatfat and that BETA must move the dogs
within 3 days or they will all be shot. They have stated that people in the
mountains are complaining about the barking (which is ridiculous considering
there are bombings all night). Please write to the Minister immediately and
ask him to allow BETA to continue operating the temporary dog shelter.
In addition please ask the minister to halt the practice of allowing police officers
to shoot dogs on the street for any reason.
