Look at the rally photos on this site- the march photos don't even extend half a city block.
It was touted as the largest anti-Israel rally in the country- that might be true, I don't know how many attended the ones in other cities

Anti-Israel or Anti-Palestine equals Hate and Ignorance, Pro-Palestine and Pro-Israel equals Pro-Coexistence. I lived in Israel for years working on co-existence projects and these types of one-sided, painting a grey situation black and white, gatherings are hurtful to the cause. Breeding a blind fog, simplifying a very complicated and ancient history. Listen to both sides, have first hand experiences. Demonizing does not solve anything.
We had 10,000 at our San Francisco peace march and 30,000 in the Washington,DC peace march. This milestone day, August 12, 2006, with the peace movement finally marching against the US puppet, Israel, we have finally separated the sheep from the lambs for good. The superstitious idiots standing in front of City Hall were the Democrat-Republicans who are 100% pro-Israel, and the peace movement which was at the Civic Center Plaza is the socialist Peace & Freedom Party and the reen Party, Reds and Greens.
We have now had 2 milestone marches this year: On May Day, we finally had a serious labor march, shutting down many businesses across the country. In San Francisco alone, 100,000 marched. On August 12, 2006, we finally marched against Israel.
If we are to build our peace movement now, we must walk precincts in the workingclass neighborhoods for the P&F and Green Party candidates with literature that clearly states No US Aid to Israel, and precisely what we can do here at home with the $6 billion a year that goes to Israel. I saw a lot of confused and anxious-to-learn faces on Market Street as we chanted "Our Tax Dollars Pay to Murder Arabs for Oil" and similar slogans. It is clear the average person is not hostile to us but is completely ignorant of the issues. It is a shame there are not more pictures of the actual march itself. Considering the hundreds of cameras along the march route, that is inexcusable.
The superstitious idiots who stood in front of City Hall were perhaps 100-200 in number, and were 100% upper middle class. They represented their fascist, racist class as they defended their investments in Israel and the war machine. They are the few; we are the many. They are not about to change as they have vested interests in maintaining the bankrupt status quo, namely preserving their wealth. They have nothing to offer the workingclass. I do wish people would simply ignore them when they show up at our demonstrations. Our primary task when we go on the march is to reach out to the observers with our leaflets and chants to build the peace movement. People understand economics: We cannot have guns and butter; we need money for jobs, housing, medical care, transportation, education; not for war; Israel receives $6 billion a year to defend US oil profits and is just a US military base.
Fascism is the naked force of capitalism, without the democratic facade of parliamentary democracy. The US has always had a strong fascist character, particularly in the workingclass communities where there is no illusion of justice in the courtroom. However, the workingclass itself is not fascist; it is ignorant. Our job is to teach the workingclass the issues and bring them to the peace marches.

A beautiful, multi-generational goup- Hindus, Christians, Jews, joining together in song. They sang traditional songs of peace, lead by a strolling guitarist. It was a lovely dispaly of solidarity and unity.

Uh- how can you tell someone is "upper middle class" by just looking at them? Was there something about the jeans and t-shirts of the pro-Israel supporters that gave them away? Or are you just basing your assumptions from the old anti-semetic canard, "All Jews are rich"? Anyway, forming conclusions about people based on their physical appearence is so...1950's. I'd hope for more from a reader of Indymedia.
Yes, the pro-Israel supporters know they are speaking truth to power...but they bravely do so, even faced with threatening crowds and indifferent police. There are a billion and a quarter Muslims in the world- 56 Muslim states- and only 4 million Jews. That is why the state of Israel is cherished, and it is why, even though we are greatly outnumbered, that we will stand by Israel now and forever.

I have seen signs saying "Smash the Israeli State" at a few protests and it is offensive but "Smash Islam" is much more similar to a "Smash Judaism" sign and Ive never seen anything overtly anti-Semiitc like tht at any anti-war protest (and a "Smash the Israeli State' sign can be taken to mean the curent government while "Nuke Iran" is petty clear in its desire for genocide)

There are rich and poor people supporting against and for what Israel is doing. I am against what israel is doin but we have to tell the truth or we will never win. And why is a cellphone these days the sign of a rich person? You're drawing at straws to defend the undefnesible. By the way, how many Muslims were in the pro-Israel crowd? There were plenty of Jews in the anti-Israel demonstration.
