Bay Area Sends Message to Commuters: Stop US AID to Israel!

by break the siege
"Break the Siege," a grassroots Bay Area campaign to end the assault on Lebanon and Gaza, coordinated banner drops at six locations during Thursday morning commute.

August 3 marked one of many actions opposing the ongoing Israeli terror against Palestine, the recent attacks on Lebanon, and US support of Israel. Members of the Break the Siege Campaign targeted half a dozen freeway overpasses and bridges in the Bay Area early Tuesday morning with clear messages of opposition to U.S. funding of Israel.

Beginning at 7:30am, thousands of early morning freeway commuters in San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland were greeted with 6’ x 4’ banners reading: “No More US Tax Money to Israel for Killing Civilians.” The banner drops are the latest in a series of actions organized by the newly formed Break the Siege Coalition. The group kicked off their pressure campaign last Thursday with a rally of more than 300 Bay Area residents protesting Diane Feinstein’s continued vocal support of Israel.

Break the Siege will coordinate high-profile actions every week until Israel withdraws from Lebanon and stops attacks on Palestine. They see Israel’s collective punishment of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians as a violation of basic principles of international law and human rights and they are demanding an end to all US aid to Israel. The group is also calling on the US government to join the rest of the United Nations Security Council in calling for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah.

"We are telling people what they deserve to know. With U.S. aid to Israel’s military, our hard-earned tax dollars are going to attacks on Palestinian and Lebanese residential areas, on Red Cross convoys, on United Nations posts, on medical crews and even
on civilians fleeing their homes at the demand of the Israeli army."--unnamed bannering coordinator

We need to keep the pressure mounting. i encourage everyone who cares about the horrors of this war on civilians and the ongoing brutality of the occupation of Palestine to read an article in today's (august 5th weekend edition) counterpunch.org by Virginia Tilley, a professor of political science, about the need for an organized boycott of Israel. It is a primer for implementing one as well as a very compelling and eloquent call for this kind of action.

Nothing justifies the bombing of innocent civilians, no matter who does it or in what country. The countries furnishing weapons for the carnage in the Middle East are fully complicit in the war crimes being committed, and that includes the U. S. providing Israel with the weaponry and bombs that are destroying Lebanon’s infrastructure, killing hundreds of civilians, and rendering hundreds of thousands homeless.
A military approach to the “war on terror” causes untold suffering that only creates more terrorists and hardens their resolve. There is no military solution to the conflict in Lebanon, just as there is no military solution the decades old conflict in the Palestinian territories. It is time our president and congress demonstrated some real leadership with respect to the escalating madness in this region. The U.S. should join the U.N. and the international community in demanding an immediate cease-fire, suspension of money and weapon sales to all parties, and require underlying political disputes be resolved through multiparty negotiations based on human rights and international law. This is the only responsible means to securing lasting peace and security in that region.
