Spraying Opponents to Hold Press Conference in Davis Today at 5 PM

A coalition of community organizations opposed to pesticide spraying by the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District will hold a press conference at 5 pm today, August 4, in front of City Hall, 23 Russell Boulevard, (corner of Russell Blvd. and B St.), in Davis.

The district announced they would be aerial spraying the Davis/Woodland area with adulticides beginning Thursday evening, but they weren’t able to spray last night because of high winds. The coalition, including Stop West Nile Spraying, No Spray Sacramento and Organic Sacramento, says it has over 500 signed letters from Davis residents asking for a city-wide opt-out.

“There is no evidence of the effectiveness of the adulticide spraying in stopping West Nile Virus,” said Kim Glazzard of Organic Sacramento. “We want the district to use the most effective method of rapid response – larvaciding and extensive public outreach - to protect Davis residents.”

by Woodland opt out outreach needed
The signatures are now (08/05) over 600 and this weekend we hope to reach goal of 1000 signatures in Davis. We are also considering outreach to nearby Woodland, another community on the SYMVCD mandatory spray district. Anyone who is fluent bilingual is needed to provide info in both Spanish and English. Farmworkers in Woodland are exposed to pesticdes on a daily basis on the jobsite, though flying over their homes and spraying additional pesticides only increases the load of toxins in their bodies. Unfortunately the pro-pesticide propaganda is strong in Woodland and needs some grassroots counterinfo remedies..

It would be great for other communities in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley to have an opt out of widespread pesticide spraying option available for their communities also. There are many organic (some certified, some not) farms in and around Yolo county that would risk pesticide contamination from aerial spraying and drift from delta winds..

On Weds/Thurs San Jose residents were exposed to pesticides in their neighborhoods via truck fogging, equally as dangerous and ineffective as aerial spraying..

We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
