Khamenei calls on Muslims to fight US, Israel
Iran’s supreme leader vows US will receive destructive punch for its support for ‘Zionists’.
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed on Wednesday that the United States will receive "a destructive punch" for its support for "Zionists", and called on Muslims to resist US "bullying and aggression".
"Muslims everywhere must know that the only way to fight the savage wolf of Zionism and Great Satan's aggression is devoted resistance," Khamenei said, quoted by state television, three weeks into the Israeli offensive in Lebanon.
Iran is one of the main backers of the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which captured two Israeli soldiers on July 12 to try to secure a prisoner swap, and triggered a massive Israeli onslaught on Lebanon.
"The American regime must expect a hard slap and a destructive punch by the Islamic nations for its support of Zionist criminals," the supreme leader said.
The United States accuses the Islamic regime and its key regional ally Syria of arming and financing Hezbollah and encouraging its attacks on Israel. Both Tehran and Damascus insist they give only moral support to the Shiite militant group.
In contradiction of American and Israeli policy, France has signalled a willingness to involve Iran directly in talks to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said on Monday that Iran "plays an important stabilising role" in the region.
But praising Hezbollah and its leader Hassan Nasrallah, Khamenei vowed that Iran "will stand by all oppressed nations especially the dear people of Lebanon and the combattant nation of Palestine."
"Iran considers it a duty to resist US bullying and aggression as well as the Zionist regime's evil".
The United States has resisted calls for an immediate ceasefire and defended Israeli strikes in which more than 820 Lebanese have been killed, more than 3,000 wounded and tens of thousands forced to flee their homes, according to various sources. Some 50 Israelis have also died.
