Anti-Immigrant Protest this weekend

by danielsan
Some out-of-town "anti-alien" group is trying to organize a rally this weekend in Santa Cruz. Check the website, check out the rhetoric. Come out to meet & greet, Saturday at noon at the town clock.
Might some Santa Cruz locals want to respond or confront, to educate or
bear witness? To cover the protest for local independent media so as to
avoid a rehash of the Senile's coverage of the Republicans vs. the
BusDrivers event? (where a small conservative counter protest was given front page news and extensive attention while larger-scale labor solidarity was ignored)

Turnout will *likely* be low and it might not be worth a mention or a
response, but who knows... these days, maybe a bunch of racists will come out of the closet to profess their disgust for their fellow humans.

I don't think we should spend all day every day reacting to the ridiculousness that is conservative politics, but what with Maria Shriver coming to Watsonville and a real life anti-immigrant protest coming to town, it's tempting to spend all weekend defending ourselves and raising some hell.

an announcement for the rally follows:

Aren't UCSC students out-of towners? Why don't the real locals meet and greet with students and let them know how we feel about their rhetoric.

gotta love the anti-student trolls, huh?

Many of the so called ´locals´ were once students at UCSC too - in fact, I think the stats say that 1 in 6 UCSC students in the past decided to stay in Santa Cruz. Your favorite ´local´establishments, and probably many of the things you love about Santa Cruz can be linked to students. Cruzio, Saturn Cafe, Zachary´s.

And please, don´t forget about the students who were raised in SC. The University is a quality and less-expensive resources for those of us that can´t afford to go to school in some other city, or for some other reason choose UCSC.

Why hate?

During my Sunday "Bathrobespierre's Broadsides" radio show (archived shortly at http://www.huffsantacruz.org), I got a report that counter-demonstrators outnumbered "anti-alien" demonstrators 20-1. Any specifics from folks who were there.

For those interested in detailed and moving view of the sharecropper scam, check out Eric Schlosser's Reefer Madness: Sex, Drugs and Cheap Labor in the American Black Market. It's available at the main library. I've played part of an audio reading by Schlosser on my show (7-23, archived as above).
