Brazilian fatalities in Lebanon rise to seven

by reposted
Israeli military strikes in Lebanon had killed another Brazilian citizen on Tuesday, raising the number of its nationals killed in the conflict to seven, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
Dibe Barakat, 62, died on Tuesday in the town of Sultam, in the Bekaa Valley. According to his nephew Muhammed Nagib, Israeli missiles hit the furniture factory where Barakat worked. He had been living in Sultam for four years with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Nagib said that over 1,000 Brazilians living in Sultam and Barakat had not considered returning to Brazil in spite of the attacks. Nagib added that he and his relatives would attend a meeting with the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Celso Amorim in Brasilia.

"Our aim is to ask the Brazilian government to provide further support for the rescue of Brazilians in Lebanon. Evacuation is happening very slowly", Nagib said.

Brazil's Consul in Lebanon Michel Gepp said Wednesday that the evacuation was limited, as the Brazilian airplane used in the operation could only take about 100 passengers at once. He gave examples of other countries, such as France and the United States, which were using ships and boats to evacuate their citizens from Lebanon.

Gepp added he was waiting for instructions from the Brazilian government concerning the next operation, which had not been confirmed yet. He stressed that Brazilians living in the Bekaa Valley were facing the worst situation, as they could not be transferred to the capital Beirut because all the roads and bridges had been destroyed and many people were being left behind.

Rio de Janeiro, Jul 18 (Prensa Latina) While a greatly concerned Brazilian government is sending a plane for citizens trapped in the war in Lebanon, other Brazilians, with relatives there, are trying to go to Lebanon to help them.

Jornal do Brasil daily reported Tuesday that some Brazilian citizens are taking the risk of traveling to Lebanon to be near sick and elderly relatives isolated by the Israeli siege, inversely to the evacuation organized by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry through Turkish mediation.

Zaki Moussa, director of Summer Land travel agency, told the daily they´d sent some 800 Brazilians already, and estimated there are 12,000 people in the Lebanese community of Fox Iguazu, Brazil.

He said it is difficult to get tickets for the 10 daily flights to Beirut and two to Damascus, because there are almost no seats on the planes.

Jornal do Brasil has been publishing news about the military invasion of Lebanon with photos of the destruction caused by the constant bombing, and showing people hiding under houses, without light, transport, or even water.

Seven Brazilians have died in the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, and thousands more are stranded, according to the Brazilian embassy in Beirut.

The first was a seven-year-old boy, Bassel Termos, from the Foz do Iguacu area of Brazil who was on holiday with his parents.

The latest, Dib Barakat, 62, was killed when an Israeli air attack destroyed the furniture factory which he owned and where he was working.

Barakat had been living in Lebanon for 10 years.

Family members had to flee from his funeral when bombs began falling 50 metres from the cemetery.

Dib's nephew, Kalil Laila, told local media in Brazil that his uncle lived in a region of Lebanon that had a large Brazilian population, and that they were having difficulties getting out of the country.

Despair

Brazilian refugees arrive home
Lebanon is a popular summer destination for Brazilians and home to many.

There were about 200,000 Brazilians in Lebanon when the conflict between Israel and its neighbour erupted into a military campaign.

Brazil, in turn, has the largest Lebanese population outside the Middle East.

Brazilian television showed scenes of despair and incredulity at a mosque in Sao Bernardo do Campo, where Barakat had lived for 20 years.

Celso Amorim, the Brazilian foreign minister, said: "It's a tragedy what is happening in the Middle East.

"It's extremely negative and threatening for the people who are there, for the Brazilians who die still wearing the national football shirt of Brazil, which brings home graphically the tragedy for us."
