What’s In Store for Local Ballot Measures in November
In the lead-up to last June’s election, many predicted the real battles on the ballot would take place in November. Rumblings of a major progressive taxation measure, a tenant measure, and a host of other progressive measures circulated amongst activists. As of now, however, it appears few if any of those fights will take place, and in terms of local measures, November’s ballot looks like it may be sparsely populated. As the Board of Supervisors takes up four different proposals today that could go before voters, none appear likely to mobilize many people. Will progressives pull together an effort soon enough to beat August deadline for ballot measures, or will they focus on the races for Supervisor and Governor instead?
Perhaps the most exciting idea making its rounds earlier this summer was a progressive tax measure that would fill city coffers by taxing downtown. It’s been a goal for progressives since big businesses filed a successful lawsuit challenging San Francisco’s tax structure, a suit which has ended up costing the city at least $20 million a year in revenue for the city.
