Troops Home Fast in San Francisco is on!!
We are fasting outside Senator Dianne Feinstein's office in downtown SF for one
week, and we continue our fast from 8 am to 8 pm today, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Our
fast will culminate with a ceremony on Wednesday evening at 5 pm in front of Senator
Feinstein's office at One Post and Market.
Troops Home FastTomorrow will be the 7th day of fasting for our sisters in DC, and
for some of us here in SF. Last week on Wednesday night we started a week-long
rolling fast outside the new home of our Senator, Dianne Feinstein, in Pacific
Heights. We camped out in the public garden that affronts Feinstein's new mansion
and early the next morning we moved the fast in front of Feinstein's office where we
have maintained a strong, steady energy of encouragement for our Senator or her aide
to speak with us. The fast has continued for the past four days. On Saturday, our
fast spread to Davis, and a group will be fasting outside our state capitol in
Sacramento every day this week.
If you are in the North Bay, you can join Leslie (leslieangeline [at] yahoo.com)
Monday-Wednesday from 8-10 am in Santa Rosa (1101 College Avenue) to fast outside
Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey's office in support of her work to bring our troops home
and urging other elected officials to do the same.
FeinsteinWhy Dianne: We have voiced a daily invitation for the Senator to hear our
concerns of the current occupation in Iraq and the number of deaths that are taking
their toll on our hearts daily. We have yet to hear from her in spite of numerous
phone calls made daily. Two weeks ago, our senator stated, ?The time has come for a
phased redeployment to finally begin. In my view, an open-ended commitment is no
longer sustainable in Iraq.? We are eager for Feinstein?s actions to support her
verbal support for demobilization of the troops. We acknowledge Feinstein?s voting
record, which shows again and again her support for the war, most recently when she
voted against Kerry?s bill for troop withdrawal, and we urge her to change this
pattern and start voting for peace.
Culminating Ceremony: On Wednesday, July 12, at 5 pm outside Feinstein's office we
conclude this portion of events with a ceremony with music by Augusta Lee Collins.
Our guest speakers will include Nadia McCaffrey, A Gold Star Mother whose son was
killed in Iraq; Barbara Becnel, who campaigned for Governor of California; Eli
Painted Crow, a Native American soldier who served in Iraq with 22 years in
military; Fred Jackson, a Vietnam Veteran and; and Sureya Sayadi, a Kurdish Iraqi
mother whose family currently resides in Iraq.
FastersContact us at (415) 994-1723 or codepinkbayarea [at] riseup.net with questions, to
let us know that you'll be joining us for a specific time at our fast vigil, or to
volunteer to help with the action coordinating for Wednesday night. Please visit
http://www.troopshomefast.org for tips on fasting, a list of our demands, and updates from
the DC and other national fasts. This a rolling fast, so please don't think you need
to be involved for the entire time to make an impact. Show up for as long as you are
able. We've had lots of press coverage so far, and our action Wednesday night
promises to garner further public attention.
Hope to see you soon!
