Maxxam Land Scam, 2,000 Acres To Lose Conservation Protection- Expected Next Week

Maxxam/ Pacific Lumbers "Habitat Conservation Plan" HCP restricts logging along water courses and prevents conversion of land zoning from timber production.

This is why they have requested that these restrictions be dropped on 2,000 acres of their holdings. They could then log more trees and/or expediate their efforts to sell it off.

PL would be required to apply protection to an equilvaent amount of acreage "that company and wildlife officials say has superior conservation value."

What is the criteria for "superior conservation value" ?

"hundreds of acres of timber that is at least several decades old and would provide better wildlife habitat for such federally listed endangered species as the spotted owl, marbled murrelet and Coho salmon"- according to the Dept. of Fish and Game.

"We do not see it as even a marginal call," Greg Hurner, deputy director of the California Department of Fish and Game, said in a telephone interview. "There is a clear benefit to the state."


What are They Hiding?

If there is such a "clear benefit", why haven't the details been disclosed to the public?
