TRIBU to perform in Sacramento July 6th
 
The Zapatista Solidarity Coalition is proud to present TRIBU, an award winning, internationally known musical group from Mexico, on July 6, 2006 at 7 pm at the Colonial Theatre, 3522 Stockton Blvd. in Sacramento. The event is a benefit for the Zapatista Solidarity Coalition.
 
TRIBU (the Spanish word for “tribe”) is a unique musical group whose outstanding characteristic is the use of prehispanic musical instruments. The four musicians who make up TRIBU have studied exhaustively the musical traditions of ancient America, as well as contemporary indigenous music. Drawing on this knowledge, they have re-created a variety of prehispanic instruments that they employ to create traditional, yet creative and innovative musical performances that evoke the ritual and magic of ancient America.
 
TRIBU has composed music for movies, theater, dance, and multimedia productions. Over the years, they have produced 15 recordings and one video. They have toured internationally in the U.S., France, Italy, Japan, Argentina, Cuba, and Jamaica. In Mexico, they have appeared in theaters and schools in many cities, as well as performing live in archaeological sites such as Teotihuacán, Tulúm, Chichén Itzá, Xochicalco, and Tajín. They have composed and recorded the musical scores for “Light and Sound” spectaculars at Chichén Itzá and Tajín.
 
TRIBU is also active in the field of education. For ten years, they participated in the “Living Museum” Project of the Nacional Museum of Anthropology and History, and are currently collaborating with the national Secretary of Public Education. They have contributed to exhibitions of prehispanic Mexican musical instruments at the National School of Music, the Cuicuilco Museum, and the National School of Anthropology.
